Social pennant continues

WHILE the midweek and weekend pennants are done for Mortlake, the over 60s social pennant continues.

Last Tuesday was scheduled for a round robin, where players gather to player in mixed teams before the finals start.

Sadly the round was called off due to the total fire ban day, resulting in no play.

It is hoped the semi-finals will be played next week in Mortlake.

Action will begin at 11am next Tuesday, February 24 when Mortlake White will take on Camperdown and Mortlake Blue will face Terang.

The winners will progress to the grand final the following week – entry is free.

Round two results form the men’s pairs:

Anthony and Alan Wood def J. Rasmussen and N. Boyden.

K. Johnson and G. Gibson def J. Tanner and D. McKenzie.

D. McNicoll and D. Dolling def Paul and Tim Delaney.

C. Inverarity and C. Baxter lost to D. Grant and C. Goldsworthy.

Semi-final results:

J. Rasmussen and N. Boyden def K. Johnson and G. Bison on an extra end and have booked their spot in the final.

D. McNicoll and D.Dolling are yet to face D. Grant and C. Goldsworthy for a spot in the final.

In the ladies’ pairs, J. Grant and V. Smith will play R. Pasque and W. Mcdonald.

G. Kenna and S. Richie will play G. Macdonald and D. Robertson.

The winners will meet each other in the final in March. Any issues please see a member of the match committee.

Last Friday afternoon Mortlake hosted its annual mixed pairs tournament which saw 54 players contest four games of six ends in a quick-paced format.

While previous years had resulted in washouts, the weather was nice this year.

It all came down to the last game in two different matches to decide who would take home the win.

Winners on the day were from Timboon – Brett Mungean, Debbie Keane and Cherie Mungean, with four wins +16 shots.

The runners-up were from City Memorial – Gerald Madden, Sally Madden and David Sedgley with three wins +19 shots.

A huge thanks to those players who travelled, coming from as far as Timboon, Port Fairy, Lake Bolac and Macarthur.

Thanks also to those who took along a plate for afternoon tea, along with the sponsors, and Dianne Robertson, Colin Goldsworthy, Ann Johnson and Des Phillips for supplying player and raffle prizes.

In the men’s B grade semi-finals, D. Dolling lost to S. Pierce and R. Draffen def C. Inverarity.

In the final played last Sunday, S. Pierce def R. Draffen. Congratulations to Scott and well done to Richard.

Les Johnson put in a great effort this season to make it to the WDPA men’s singles final.

He played David Wells from City Memorial Bowls Club but unfortunately David was the better bowler on the day – well done to Les on a fantastic effort.

A reminder that the Mortlake ladies will host a ladies’ fours tournament on Friday, February 27.

The cost is $80 per team with morning and afternoon tea provided (BYO lunch).

The kick off is 6pm and it’s only $5 to play.

Bowls can be provided if needed and first time bowlers are welcome (help is provided).
