Solid effort from Tigers
A SMALL lapse in the second quarter against Lorne proved costly for Simpson’s senior footballers last weekend.
Despite five unanswered goals early in the game, the Tigers put in a solid effort to be within eight points by the major break.
“They (Lorne) did get away from us a bit in the second quarter and I guess that’s what cost us in the end,” coach Daniel Beard said.
“But I thought we battled really well, it was just that small window where they ran away.
“We took some momentum into the second half and played some really good footy. We are a little undermanned at the moment but in saying that, those who were out there on the weekend really gave it a good crack.”
After this weekend’s bye round, Beard expects the Tigers to see the return of several players, which will put them in good stead for the remainder of the season.
“We need to pick up a win against one of the sides higher up the ladder to get us back into finals contention on the run home,” he said.
“Some years the run of the grain seems to be against you, and we’re abit like that at the moment, but it’s certainly not due to effort and no-one is down on it.
“We’re up and about and will keep battling away. We’ll re-set and get ready to run.”
Final scores last weekend were Lorne 11.6.72 to Simpson 4.3.27.
Best for the Tigers were Brock Neal, Jonathon Jennings, Jack Hookway, Bradley Gillingham, Mark Jamar and Mitch Wright.
Jennings booted three goals for the side while Sam Rial contributed one.
Simpson’s reserves head into the bye sitting second on the league ladder, just a game behind leaders Irrewarra-Beeac.
Round 12 saw the Tigers enjoy a well-earned 59 point victory over Lorne, 12.9.81 to 3.4.22.
Brodie Neale kicked three for the day while Cody Mason added two.
Goals also went to Jamie Barry, Harry Fleming, Shaun Guy, Brayden Hawkes, Samuel Newcombe, Jordan Riches and Darcy Thorburn.
Among the best were Cody Mason, Cooper Neal, Jamie Barry, Matthew Rhode, Bailey Vines and Brodie Neale.
