WOORNDOO MORTLAKE enjoyed a solid victory away to Wickliffe Lake Bolac on Saturday, leading throughout the match to win 11.11 (77) to 6.5 (41).
The Tigers started well, going into the first break two goals up, and outkicked the Magpies by a steady one or two goals through each of the next three quarters to win by 36 points.
Half-back flanker Sam Gervasoni was best on ground for the victors, finding plenty of space and possession to drive the ball into offence for the Tigers.
Jordan Buckley kicked three for Woorndoo Mortlake, while Scott Addinsall, Jesse Horan and Matthew Pemberton each added two to the Tigers’ tally.
Woorndoo Mortlake coach Tyson Hogan said he was really pleased with the effort from all players through the whole match.
“I asked for four quarters, and for the first time all year we played well for four quarters of footy,” he said.
“It was a pretty well-rounded performance in the end; everyone played their roles, which we’ve focused on a lot."
“Do the things you’re good at, the things you’re in the team for. We did the basic things right, and that showed on the scoreboard for us.”
Hogan said he was particularly impressed with his players’ efforts through the third period, where the Tigers stretched out the margin from 22 points to 34.
“The talk at half-time was about not switching off. It’s one thing we’ve been caught out on a couple of times,” he said.
“Sometimes in the past we’ve switched off thinking the job’s done, so we really put some emphasis on coming out after the half-time break and putting the foot down.”
The Tigers host Great Western this weekend, who have won just a single game so far this season, but Hogan said he was wary of being overconfident.
“You can’t take any team for granted. You’ve got to restart each week,” he said.
“We’ll look to keep playing the style we want to play and let the scoreboard tick over, and hopefully we can get the win and boost our percentage a little bit.”
