Sportsman's Club announces award nominees
NOMINATIONS for this year's Corangamite Sportsman's Club's Sports Star of the Year awards have been announced.
In the senior award category, Arthur Finch (bowls), Darcy Tribe (surf lifesaving) and Tom Roberts (barefoot skiing) have all been nominated.
Mr Finch continued his winning streak this year, winning the Victorian state men’s bowls singles followed by gold at the nationals in Caloundra in August.
Darcy Tribe, who began as a six year-old Nipper at the Port Campbell Life Saving Club, is now aged in his 20s and is the current club captain.
At the Victorian Surf Lifesaving awards he took home the John Wishart Memorial medal for life saver of the year while the cub won the coveted shield for Club of the Year.
The award was for displaying innovative and effective patrolling and management practices, strategic planning and inclusive participant involvement.
Cobden’s Tom Roberts won his first gold medal in barefoot skiing at the national championships in Queensland in May.
Competing in the under 23 division for the first time, he won the jumps, slalom and tricks disciplines to claim the overall win.
His performance also earned him selection in the Australian open squad for next year’s world championships.
He also finished fifth overall in the junior 2023 International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation World Barefoot Championships in Mulwala.
In the junior Sports Star of the Year category, Stella Horspole (equestrian), Indiana Cameron (netball) and Jake Burleigh (swimming) have each been nominated.
Stella added to her growing list of riding accolades with the Victorian team national championship title and an individual runner-up national senior showhorse champion title.
Stella also competed as Victoria’s number one representative at the recent national championships.
Indiana Cameron won Hampden League’s 15 and under best and fairest, polling 44 from a possible 54 votes.
Her dedication to training is reflective in her on-court success.
Jake Burleigh participated in the 2023 country swimming championships in Darwin where he won four gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
The talented 14-year-old from Lismore trains six times a week with Jayson Lamb in Warrnambool, three of which include early morning starts.
In the senior team award, nominations have been received for Port Campbell Surf Lifesaving, Camperdown ladies’ division one pennant team and Heytesbury Indoor Bowls.
At the 20th anniversary Victorian Surf Lifesaving Awards, the Port Campbell club won the shield for club of the year.
Camperdown’s division one golf team – comprising Marg White, Gabby Gill, Tracey Baker, Jenny Hillman, Donna Conheady and Terri Sinnott – took home the Western District Golf Association division one ladies’ pennant title.
Heytesbury Indoor Bowls team members Scott Pierce, Gary Body and Allen Armisted combined to win the Victorian men’s triples state title in July.
In the junior team award category, the nominations included Pomborneit’s 17 and under girls’ cricket team, Bookaar’s under 16 boys’ premiership cricket side and St Patrick’s Primary School’s mixed netball team.
Winners will be announced at a presentation evening at the Camperdown Golf Club next Wednesday, December 13.
