St Paul’s Church filled with song
ST Paul’s Anglican Church was filled with song and joy on Sunday as part of a special hymn fest.
Around 100 people attended the event, singing hymns from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
Reverend Matthew Jones said attendees travelled from far and wide, which he found “fantastic”.
“Demby McKenzie was outstanding, and we raised just over $1100 for Anglicare which was fantastic,” he said.
“People also brought lots of tinned food and beanies and scarves, so that’s all being sent off to Anglicare for their winter appeal.
“It was such an act of generosity and care for people who are struggling.
“I said to people on the day it would have a profound effect – we may never know the effect it has on people, but it will have a profoundly positive effect on the lives of people.
“I thank them all for their generosity.”
Twelve hymns were sung over the course of the afternoon, with musical accompaniment from a pipe organ, two violins and a piano.
Rev Jones said guest performer Demby McKenzie performed three solo songs, with his final number ‘The Holy City’ proving popular.
“The applause was incredible,” he said.
“I think people really enjoyed the opportunity to sing.
“They then joined in for a wonderful afternoon tea and it was a great atmosphere.
“I would like to thank the community for their support.
“It was great to see the church full, to hear the amazing singing and to know we were supporting such an important and worthwhile cause.”
