St Thomas’ Primary School was a hive of activity on Tuesday morning as part of the school’s annual Big Breakfast.

The event saw everything from pancakes, egg and bacon rolls, toast, fresh fruit and tee and coffee served up for a big crowd eager to enjoy a great breakfast and even better company.

St Thomas’ Primary School principal Matthew Uzkuraitis said the Big Breakfast was not only an opportunity to celebrate an important Christian tradition, but an opportunity for the community to connect.

“It’s always great to get the community together,” he said.

“Last year was the first we had been able to do it since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, so to be able to continue building on that momentum and getting the community involved is something we value as a school.

“This is obviously an important part of the church’s calendar, Shrove Tuesday, leading in to that Lenten period for us and the parish.

“I think that’s an important part but getting everyone together and being part of that school community is really important too.”

Mr Uzkuraitis thanked the school’s parents and friends committee for its hard work behind the scenes to ensure the day was a success, and the big turnout well catered for.

The Big Breakfast, organised by the committee, also serves as a fundraiser to benefit students.

This year funds raised will support the purchase of a new barbecue which can be used to treat the students, and support further events for all to enjoy.

“Our parents and friends are amazing with preparing, setting up and packing up,” Mr Uzkuraitis said.

“We just can’t thank them enough, they’ve been great.

“The fundraising isn’t the main reason, but every dollar which can support our students helps, and parents at the school have been so support of the Big Breakfast for a long time.

“We’ve very grateful for their support.”
