Stalwart to hang up secretary hat
CAMPERDOWN Country Fire Authority (CFA)’s Bernie Sinnott has decided to hang up his secretarial hat but plans to stay with the brigade he loves.
Mr Sinnott made the call at the recent CFA brigade awards night, which saw him honoured for his 40 years of service as secretary.
He was also presented with a gift from the brigade by captain Michael Carman, who paid tribute to his long-standing service.
“I would like to take the opportunity for a special acknowledgement,” Mr Carman said.
“A brigade dinner is always a chance to come together, share a meal and enjoy each other’s company – but this evening carries an extra significance.
“We are here to recognise and celebrate a truly remarkable milestone.
“It’s a number that makes you pause – 40 years of minutes, reports, correspondence, meetings and the endless behind the scenes work that keeps a brigade running smoothly.
“Forty years of commitment to the Camperdown community and to every member who has walked through our doors.”
While he plans to step back as secretary, Mr Sinnott aims to continue as treasurer for the brigade.
“I’m just happy to let the younger ones take over. It’s as simple as that,” he said.
“It’ll still be in the role of treasurer if they want me, which I’ve had for 51 years.”
Mr Carman said Mr Sinnott, who is affectionately known as ‘Spike’ to his fellow firefighters, is considered the “quiet engine room” of the Camperdown brigade.
“While others were out front, he was the one making sure everything was recorded, organised and ready for the next step,” he said.
“His accuracy, his consistency and his calm approach have been the backbone of our administration for decades.
“But what makes his contribution truly special isn’t just the paperwork – it’s the person behind it.
“Bernie has been a steady presence, a source of knowledge and someone you could always rely on.
“He has supported countless captains, officers and members with dedication.”
Mr Carman congratulated Mr Sinnott on his 40-year milestone.
“Across four decades, Spike has helped guide this brigade through change, challenge and growth,” he said.
“He has documented our history, preserved our stories and ensured that the work we do – the work we’re proud of – is remembered.
“Bernie, your service has shaped this brigade – your loyalty has strengthened it and your legacy will continue long after tonight.
“On behalf of every member here – past and present – we thank you for your extraordinary 40 years as secretary.
“We are honoured to celebrate this milestone with you tonight, surrounded by friends, family and the brigade you have given so much to.”
