Stirring win galvanising youthful Bombers
COBDEN showed no signs of rust on Saturday as its senior football and open netball sides returned to play with compelling victories over Warrnambool.

COBDEN showed no signs of rust on Saturday as its senior football and open netball sides returned to play with compelling victories over Warrnambool.
The senior footballers recorded a gutsy 13.11 (89) to 12.9 (81) come-from-behind win at Warrnambool’s Deakin University.
Adam Courtney’s men reeled in a 15 point three quarter time deficit after scores were deadlocked at the main change, with six goals to three in the final term seeing the Bombers across the line.
Courtney was proud of his side’s fightback, praising his men for their efforts after the Blues threatened to run away with the points.
“We were 15 points down at three quarter time and Warrnambool kicked the first goal in the first minute and we were on the back foot but the boys showed good character to stay in the game and continue their pressure,” he said.
“We were able to put Warrnambool under pressure around the ball and by doing that we were able to finish with 6.7 which was a great result.”
Courtney said the win would galvanise his group further after it recorded its first victory over Portland in its previous outing.
“It will instill a bit of confidence within the boys that the game style we’re putting in place is working across four quarters now rather than how it’s gone in the past,” he said.
“They’re all getting to training and are showing they haven’t slowed down - they’re still coming to training and working hard and working on their skills which is positive.
“Hopefully we can keep continuing on this good form.”
Courtney said Noah Mounsey’s shut down role on Luke Cody, ruckman Mark Marriott’s dominance over Daniel Weymouth and the efforts of half-forward Josh Hickey and Matty Kemp and midfielders Patrick Smith and Jack Hutt were crucial to his side’s winning chances.
However, the only downside to the victory was a serious shoulder injury to Sam Giblett, with the wingman now expected to miss the majority of the season.
In the other senior football matches, Camperdown recovered from a five goal deficit to defeat Hamilton Kangaroos, Koroit outclassed Port Fairy, South Warrnambool was too good for Terang Mortlake and North Warrnambool edged out Portland.
On the netball court, a strong second quarter was the catalyst for extending the open netball side’s winning run.
The Bombers led by a goal at the first change, but moved clear with a 19-8 period to enter half-time 12 goals ahead.
Cobden then maintained its margin in the third term, before it finished strongly to secure a 57-40 victory.
Goalie Molly Hutt (24 goals) was the side’s best player, while defender Remeny McCann and mid-courter Sophie Blain also performed well.
The win sees the Bombers still undefeated after seven games, with the side two points clear of South Warrnambool.
In the other open netball matches, Camperdown narrowly defeated Hamilton Kangaroos, Koroit was too strong for Port Fairy, South Warrnambool defeated Terang Mortlake and North Warrnambool accounted for Portland.
This weekend’s Hampden league matches had not been finalised when the Cobden Timboon Coast Times went to print and were expected to be confirmed overnight.
