Strong last quarter
A STRONG 51-point final quarter gave Cobden’s senior footballers the win over Hamilton last weekend.

A STRONG 51-point final quarter gave Cobden’s senior footballers the win over Hamilton last weekend.
Senior coach Dan Casey praised his side’s huge final quarter effort, saying the win would give them the added self-relief needed going into this weekend’s clash with third-placed North Warrnambool.
“Because of the way the boys were playing it felt like we were further ahead on the board for most of the game than we actually were,” Casey said.
“But to run out the last quarter and pile on eight goals was a great effort and I’m really proud of them all.”
The Hamilton Kangaroos jumped Cobden in the first quarter, going into the break with a five point lead.
But a second quarter turnaround by the Bombers saw them add 29 points to the board while keeping their opposition to just nine points.
“Our third quarter wasn’t one of the best and we allowed Hamilton to get back into the game,” Casey said.
“We were only three points up at three-quarter time and needed to pull out all stops to take the points – and that’s exactly what we did in the final quarter."
“We piled on eight goals and really ran out the game well which was pleasing.”
While it seems the Bombers missed their opportunity to sneak into the five after the previous week’s loss, sitting sixth is something to be proud of according to Casey.
“It’s disappointing not to be playing finals but in saying that we can hold our heads high if we finish the season in sixth,” he said.
“I think we finished about ninth last season so the improvement is definitely there and it just shows we’re on the up. We’re looking forward to this weekend’s clash with North and then finishing off the year hosting Terang Mortlake.”
Best for the Bombers last weekend were Michael Koroneos, Paul Pekin, Charlie Darcy, Grady Rooke, Henry Robertson and Christian Koroneos.
Goals went to Michael Koroneos (7), Thomas Spokes (3), Oliver Darcy (2), Jia Anderson, Luke Hickey, Matthew Kemp, Paul Pekin and Grady Rooke.
In the reserves, Cobden defeated Hamilton 14.12.96 to 5.5.35.
The win places the team in fifth on the ladder, one game clear of the Kangaroos in sixth.
Best for the Bombers were Luke Pekin, Johno Benallack, Adam Courtney, Tyler Humphrey, Bradley Gillingham and Jack Darcy.
Goals went to Harrison Herschell (3), Jack Darcy (2), Brady Green (2), Tyler Humphrey (2), James McLeod (2), Adam Courtney, Steven Fisher and Bradley Gillingham.
