The Tigers had a strong opening quarter on Saturday, kicking 2.4 while containing the home side to 1.1.
The second quarter proved costly for the Tigers, who could only add a further eight points to the board while the home side stepped up the pressure and converted well to finish the half with a handy 21-point lead.
The Tigers made a comeback in the third quarter, winning that term to get within 10 points of Birregurra.
And in the final quarter, the Tigers struggled to finish, adding just three points to the board while Birregurra steamed home with an extra six goals.
Final scores were Birregurra 15.7.97 to Simpson 7.11.53.
Best for the Tigers were Matthew Drayton, Jesse Gallichan, Brad Salmon, Thomas Leishman, Noah Ackerley and Lachlan Gass.
Nicholas Harding finished the day with three goals while Matthew Drayton scored two.
Gus Hawkes and Leishman both contributed with one goal each.
Simpson’s reserves, who currently sit third on the league ladder, equal on points but percentage behind second-placed Birregurra, had a handy 31-point win on the weekend.
Best for the Tigers in what was a great team effort were Zachary Harrop-Anderson, Jono Jennings, Reagan Jones, Brodie Neale, Cooper Neal and Jaryd Duynhoven.
Jennings had a great day in front of goals, booting six for the match, while Matt Delahey, Jack Hawkes and Drew Kordupel each contributed a goal.
Earlier in the day, Simpson’s under 18s had a tough game against Birregurra, going down 11.14.80 to 0.2.2.
Bodhi Crole, Jack Balcombe, Oliver Rial, Louis Janssen, Nate Sambell and Austin de Bie were best for the Tigers.
On the netball courts it was a mixed bag of results for the Tigers:
A grade – Simpson defeated Birregurra 47-43.
B grade – Birregurra defeated Simpson 53-30.
C grade – Birregurra defeated Simpson 50-24.
17 and under – Birregurra defeated Simpson 43-29.
15 and under – Simpson defeated Birregurra 32-24.
13 and under –Birregurra defeated Simpson 42-23.
The club recently announced the appointment of Emily Duynhoven as A grade coach for season 2024.
Emily returned to play with the club this season, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge.
She will replace Jessie Harding who has spent the past two years leading the A grade side, creating a positive, enjoyable culture among the playing group.
Round 17 this Saturday will see the Tigers at home to Apollo Bay before rounding out the home and away season next weekend against Otway Districts.
