Last weekend’s Mininera League season-opener was a thriller for the Tigers, who were out to turn the tables on the Hawks following a 14-point loss in last year’s grand final.

Tatyoon got off to a strong start on Saturday, kicking 2.4 for the opening quarter while holding the visitors to just two behinds.

The second term was an improved one from the Tigers, adding pressure all over the ground and converting in their forward 50 to add 5.5 to the board, going into the main break with an 11-point lead.

The Hawks fought back in the third term, bringing the margin to just four points and setting the scene for a close final term.

The Tigers momentum kicked up a notch in the last quarter, which proved pivotal in the outcome - adding two goals six while holding the home-side scoreless for the term.

Final scores were Woorndoo Mortlake 8.13.61 to Tatyoon 5.9.39.

Best for the Tigers were Haydn Templeton, Dougal Sweeney, Matthew Pemberton, Sam Jasper, Tom Gough and Damien Pemberton.

Matthew Pemberton kicked three for the day while James Coghlan West added two and Jesse Horan, Lachlan Jubb and Ethan Mayhew contributed a goal apiece.

Earlier in the day, the Tigers’ reserves (last year’s preliminary finalists) went down to Tatyoon by 15 points in what was a low-scoring affair, 1.8.14 to 4.5.29.

Best for the Tigers were Tahi Pompey, James Henry, Xavier Glossop, Matthew Bourchier, Geordie MacDonald and Tom Carmichael.

Karl Dunn was the side’s only goal scorer.
