Strong start from Cobden bowlers

BOWLS is back and Cobden has kicked off midweek pennant with a win in both divisions.


Division one headed to Simpson where they defeated the home side 80-64 and as a result has headed straight to the top of the ladder.

David Staggard, Geoff Ovens, Loreign Andrews and Doreen Coverdale struggled against A.Swayn, P. Inglis, R. Yendall and M. Gass to lose 22-28.

Ann Scott, Janelle Rohan, Richard McVilly and Bazil Hammond had a nice win 26-16 over B. Clark, B. Newcombe, L. Costin and Y. Laird.

Peter Richardson, Sue Couch, Trevor Roberts and Brian Howard had a dominant win 32-20 after a slow start over M Seabrook, T. Harris, C. Dixon and H Hayden.

In division three, Cobden also defeated the home team at City in a close match, 61-55.

Jill Lynch, Joy Beaton, Don Anderson and Pam Savage were just beaten 19-23 by G. Norman, G. Harris, R. Garrick and L. Caspar.

Pat Hickey, Paul Dwyer, Evelyn Grayland and Ann Coverdale won 22-15 over D. Cowan, T. Lloyd, J. De Graff and H. Penny.

Claire Reynolds, Leon Carrigan, David Childs and Colin Spokes snuck home 20-17 against J. Mills, D. Spalding, V. Rippon and L. Cain.

This places them third on the ladder, making a great start to the season for both teams.

Meanwhile weekend pennant had mixed results.

All three teams played at home in very pleasant weather conditions.

Unfortunately, the new powerhouse club, the Camperdown Magpies, which consists of the merged Camperdown Golf and Camperdown clubs, was too strong for Cobden’s division two team, defeating them 107- 85 shots.

Darren Mulgrew, Brendan Hammond, Ann Scott and Lachie Taylor lost 21-36 to F. Salmon, L. Fitzgerald, K. Edwards and G. Edwards.

Noah Mungean, Kathryn Robertson, Ashley Sinnott and Muarray Williamson combined well to win 30-18 over P. Reilly, A. Anderson, G. Molan and K. Rundle.

Nick Kemp, Terry Beasley, Greg Rooke and Peter Richardson lost 24-29 to M. VanSomeren, G. Chamberlain, J. O’Donohue and D. Wilson.

Colin Hammond, Micheal Hickey, Brendan Hutt and Bazil Hammond had no luck, losing 10-24 to M Brebner, V. Brebner, H. VanSomeren and K. Johnston.

This places division two second last, above Apollo Bay who lost all rinks in their opening round.

After trailing early, division three dug in to beat City 3, 92-71.

Trevor Roberts, Garry Matheson, Don Anderson and David Childs struggled early but came home to win 31-15 over J. Mills, J. DeGraff, M. Bennett and A. Jackson.

Richard McVilly, Colin Spokes, Tom Robertson and Janine Hutt struggled all game and lost 10-23 to J. Neal, B. Woods, L. Bolton and T. Morrissy.

Bert Strampel, Janelle Rohan, Claire Reynolds and Jim O’Shea won 23-17 over G. Harris, R. Cooper, H. Bentley and Roger Garrick.

David Staggard, Leon Carrigan, Mitch Reed and Brian Howard had a good win over D. Biddle, G. Norman, T. Lloyd, and K. Graham 28-16.

This places Cobden third on the ladder.

Division four had a resounding win, 76-35, despite Camperdown Magpies fielding a very strong team, taking all the points to control the top of the ladder with a high percentage.

Pat Hickey, Doreen Coverdale, Rex Perkins and Loreign Andrew overwhelmed G. Mitchell, G. Weller, J. Molan and A. Whiteside 29-8.

Joy Beaton, Kath Spokes, Ken Coverdale and John Raeside won 20-14 over P. James, D. O’Donohue, R. Skene and K. Banks.

Paul Dwyer, Evelyn Grayland, Ken Farquharson and maiden bowler Barry Morgan won 27-13 over C. Wilson M. Weller, C. Strampel and S. Pearson.

A great start in the opening round for the club.
