Strong start to year for bowlers

BOWLS is back and Cobden members have been kicking goals after the Christmas recess.

In midweek pennant, division one had a good win over Cressy 91-58, taking all the points and moving into third position on the ladder.

M. Hester, B. Hammond, E. Telford and L. Andrews won 23-17 from A. Keating, H. McLaren, N. Cahill and S. Tanis.

A. Scott, T. Roberts, B. Strampel and D. Coverdale defeated N. Keating, J. Nelson, D. Parker and J. Lang 34-19 while D. Delaney, P. Richardson, S. Couch and B. Howard won 34-22.

During the next two rounds Cobden will face teams below them but must overcome ladder leaders City 1 in the final game.

Division two had a pleasant day by the seaside but only managed a draw after leading early against Lorne 60-60.

They did, however, secure more points by winning two rinks.

J. Rohan, P. Dwyer, E. Grayland and D. Childs lost 12-30 to K. Lugg, C. McCombe, E. Lugg and D. Wyles.

J. Beaton, K. Spokes, K. Lynch and P. Neal won 29-14 over J. Reddie, G. Allen, D. Williams and P. Theodore.

C. Reynolds, C. Spokes, D. Luker and D. Couch also won 19-16 from M. Mackenzie, H. Olney, P. McIver and F. O’Mara.

They remain in fifth place on the ladder, only four points behind Derrinallum.

In weekend pennant division two made a strong statement, using their home ground advantage to have a significant win over higher placed Winchelsea.

N. Kemp, P. Richardson, K. Robertson and M. Reed won 24-16 over S. Logan, A. Walker, P. Sorensen and L. Warner.

D. Mulgrew, C. Hammond, M. Williamson and T. Robertson lost to D. Littler, L. Davie, J. Johnson and W. Knuckey 21-27.

N. Mungean, G. Rooke, B. Hutt and B. Hammond won 27-17 over I. Holmes, A. Littler, J. McConachy and M. Brandenburg.

B. Robertson, A. Sinnott, B. Hammond and L. Taylor won 29-14 over A. Heaton-Harris, A. Doyle, N. Heaton-Harris and G. Lloyd.

They have exchanged places with Winchelsea, moving into second whilst demoting Winch to third.

Division three shocked higher placed City 2 winning by one shot and moving into third spot.

T. Roberts, K. Spokes, C. Whiteside and J. O’Shea won 22-16 over R. Copeland, A. Bamford, P. Nolan and M. Nolan.

R. McVilly, K. Lynch, C. Spokes and D. Anderson lost 15-16 to P. Howard, G. Robbins, S. Hickey, and J. Menzies.

L. Carrigan, J. Rohan, K. Simmonds and B. Howard lost 12-17 to S. Fanelli, T. Leslie, D. Lawrence and T. Moore.

D. Staggard, B. Strampel, G. Matheson and D. Luker won 20-19 over L. Inglis, I. McMahon, T. Murnane and V. Brown.

Division four remains in fourth place after defeating Cressy at Cressy and are a game clear of fifth placed Derrinallum.

P. Hickey, L. Andrews, D. Couch and J. Hutt had a good win 30-13 over S. Turner, A. Turner, M. Rodgers and G. Cahill.

D. Coverdale, E. Grayland, J. Raeside and K. Farquharson lost 10-22 to G. Bath, E. Stinchcombe, J. Nelson and M. Matheson.

P. Dwyer, C. Reynolds, P. Neal and K. Rundle won 23-13 over C. Bath, D. Lang, N. Cahill and C. Green.

They have a bye next week, then have a home game against third placed Colac 5.

The club mixed pairs final took place last Thursday evening with Kathryn Robertson playing with brother Brendan Hammond against club champion Darren Mulgrew and Janelle Rohan.

The siblings had the jump on the other pair, leading most of the night in a closely contested match.

They entered the final end with a lead of two shots until Darren Mulgrew played the perfect shot, picking up kitty and taking it to two back bowls to pick up three shots and win by one shot 14-13.

Kathryn and Darren both represented Cobden, playing in Colac under the dome in the Champion of Champions for the Corangamite region on Sunday.

Kathryn won her first round, defeating Pearl McIver from Lorne in a close game 25-22.

She went on to defeat Lyn Brown 25-16 in the afternoon and will play next Sunday in the semi-final against Nola Gray from Central.

Darren also won his match over Derrinallum’s Michael Haigh 25-10 in the first round however was defeated by Ian Varcoe of Winchelsea in the afternoon 25-21.
