Strong support for recovery conversations

RESIDENTS of Skipton and the surrounding area came together to share their experiences, ask questions and share in mutual support at a recent gathering.

Clinical psychologist and disaster recover consultant David Younger spoke at the free Community Conversations about Recovery session held on Wednesday, June 17 to a crowd of 25.

Corangamite Shire Council deputy mayor Cr Laurie Hickey said Mr Younger shared insights and lessons from other fire affected communities beyond the first year of recovery.

“The discussion focussed on the importance of community interconnectedness to bring about lasting recovery,” he said.

“The six-month mark is a significant point in time on the road to recovery and it is important for community members to work to minimise disruptions in life.

“Community members need to acknowledge loss, trauma and stress.

“Seek help and reach out – you’re not alone.

“The importance of a preparedness plan cannot be underestimated because catastrophic weather events will happen again.”

Council has funding available for community events which build resilience, create community connection and share information about recovery.

This includes a number of Unbreakable Farmer sessions scheduled for August 18, 19 and 20.

The McFarlane Dress Collection will also travel to Skipton, set to display at the Skipton Mechanics Hall on September 19 and 20.

Additionally, the Leslie Manor Country Fire Authority (CFA) shed will host a screening of the AFL match between Melbourne Demons and Geelong Cats on Friday, July 24 from 6.30pm.

Movie nights and bus tours are also on the cards, with dates to be confirmed.

Anyone with an idea for a community event is invited to contact council’s recovery team on 5593 7100.

“There are a range of supports and programs available to help people through their recovery,” Cr Hickey said.

“It’s okay to ask for help.

“Recovery officers from council are here to listen and help you navigate and connect with services, and you can contact either.

“There’s no wrong place to start.”
