High achiever: Derrinallum P-12 College Year Five student Archer’s learning will be extended thanks to a state-wide program.

Archer (surname withheld) will be participating in the Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP), which is delivered through Virtual Schools Victoria.

The VHAP consists of ten weekly 55-minute sessions which will extend Mathematics (Maths) and English for both primary and secondary students.

Principal Caitlyn Fitzgerald said the school community was “proud” of Archer for being selected as part of the program.

“It’s an excellent opportunity for him to be extended and get a program of a high quality – he’ll be working with other kids of like calibre from around the state,” she said.

“Archer is in Year Five, and he’s working at a Year Seven or Eight level in maths.

“He’ll be in classes with a teacher and students from around the state who are the same age as him, and we’ll be starting with English classes.

“His last class is an asynchronous class – he can do that at any stage of the week that he likes, and he will be working on a project to present to his teacher.

“We’re also hoping we’ll also get him into a maths program either next term or the term after.”

Archer said he is excited to be a part of the VHAP.

“I’m nervous that it’ll be really hard, but I’m up for the challenge,” he said.

“When I found out I was going to be a part of the program, I was like ‘yay, I’m in something special’.

“I go in with Miss Lane every Monday – I do high school maths.

“I get my own class to do something that challenges me. I love being challenged.

“I want to be a scientist, but I haven’t picked an area.”
