Winners are grinners: St Colman’s Primary School students Charlotte and Jack Allen are all smiles after their family claimed the $3000 major prize in the school’s major raffle this year.

The school was able to raise $7460 this year, which was slightly down on previous years but well beyond expectations due to the economic pinch being felt across the south west.

St Colman’s Primary School principal Janet Cain said she was grateful the community had been so supportive of the fundraiser again this year, despite many local families feeling the pinch.

“Lots of people in our community have been struggling through the drought so we’re delighted with how much people have done to support our school community,” she said.

The first prize saw the Allen family walk away with $3000 in vouchers to spend across 13 local businesses.

The second prize was a $1000 neighbourhood benefit EFTPOS card courtesy of Mortlake South Wind Farm developer Acciona and third prize was a $500 voucher to spend at Bates IGA.

“We’re happy a busy, committed family from our school community won the first prize,” Mrs Cain said.

“The second prize went to Tim Pekin, the brother of Jane Lee, who was our office person for many years – she started the raffle in the first place, so that was nice for him to come second.

“Third prize went to one of our Grade Five students, who was very excited to be the recipient of $500.”

Over the past two years the major prize had changed to include the vouchers from participating local businesses in a bid to ensure the dollars stayed local.

Mrs Cain said the school could not thank participating businesses enough for the support.

“A huge thank you to the local community businesses which support this and generously donated vouchers which go towards the lucky loot prize,” she said.

“It’s good they know someone will be going back into their shops to spend the winnings, which was important for us.

“We’re grateful for all the support.”

The raffle launched in 2001 with sweeping success which has seen a range of upgrades at the school funded including the building of the undercover area, installation of a soft-surface basketball court and the purchase of new electronics for the students.
