Students create education video
HAMPDEN Specialist School students have created a waste education video and an exhibition of artworks which will be on display at an International Day of Persons Living With a Disability morning tea.
Year 11 student Kayla Foster was one of the students who made the video, which is on Corangamite Shire Council’s YouTube channel at youtu.be/KRkdFhg4T58.
“The video shows people the right bin to put things into,” she said.
“We made it as a group to help the Corangamite Shire.
“It was a great experience, and I’m proud of how it turned out.”
International Day of Persons Living With a Disability is a United Nations day of observance held on December 3 each year.
Corangamite Shire held a morning tea on Tuesday to launch the student’s work and celebrate the day.
Mayor Kate Makin said the theme of the event was “No Limits”.
“Every person is unique. Everyone has something to offer and there are no limits,” she said.
“The Year 11 and 12 students from Hampden Specialist School are on the Accessibility Advisory Group and they have put together a new video for the shire’s web page that explains how to use our bins.
“There also a fantastic display of artwork by talented students in other grades.”
One of the speakers will be council’s project officer Dale Lawrance, who lives with cerebral palsy which affects his left arm and leg, was a guest speaker at the event.
“I keep a positive can-do attitude towards living with a disability,” he said.
“I’ve always focused on my strengths.”
Mr Lawrance has succeeded in many different jobs over the years, runs his own small cleaning business, and is helping deliver a huge IT upgrade project that spans the Corangamite, Moyne and Warrnambool councils.
The event was presented in partnership with Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority, Wannon Water, Port Campbell Inclusive Beach and, The Disabled Surfers Association of Australia
To mark International Day of Persons Living With a Disability council is also supporting Port Campbell Surf Lifesaving Club’s second accessible beach day, along with the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority, Wannon Water, Port Campbell Inclusive Beach and the Disabled Surfers Association of Australia.
The event, from 10am to 3pm on Sunday, will include supported beach tours in the beach wheelchairs and a surfing experience with the Warrnambool Disabled Surfers.
Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks and Authority staff will be there with iPads to show people how they can go online to book the beach equipment, including a hoist to transfer people from their own wheelchair to the beach one.
