Students find family connection at RSL

TERANG College students made a visit to the Terang Returned and Services Leagues (RSL) hall last Thursday to learn more about the town’s military history.
Terang RSL sub-branch president Terry Fidge held a discussion with the Year 9/10 students before RSL members provided a guided tour; giving the students an up-close look at the iconic W871 tram with refurbished interior to replicate a Word War II recruitment centre, the replica Diggers’ dugout, memorial gardens and the range of memorabilia on display.
Mr Fidge said the opportunity to engage with younger generations to ensure the knowledge of the region’s military history is passed along was a highlight for RSL members.
“It was great,” he said.
“They really enjoyed their tour of the tram, the hall and the memorabilia.
“It was fantastic to see them get involved and looking up their own connections.”
Mr Fidge said the RSL members were always happy to accommodate schools and community groups to offer a tour of the hall.
“We enjoy having people coming in and having a look around, which gives people more of a connection to their family’s past.”
Meanwhile, the Terang RSL sub-branch has also begun construction of a new path to ensure the hall is accessible to all.
“The concrete path connects from the footpath to the access ramp to the hall to ensure the hall is accessible to all members of the community,” Mr Fidge said.
