TWO primary schools took part in the annual Clean Up Australia Day event last week.

Camperdown College’s primary campus picked up rubbish in their grounds, under the supervision of their environmental leaders Logan Bryan, Landon Ross and Rehanna Durrani.

Mr Bryan said he hoped students learnt to put their rubbish in the bin, rather than just dropping it.

“If you see a bin, it’s just a short walk to it,” he said.

“We only have one world; if we don’t take care of it, where will we go?”

Ms Durrani said dumping rubbish everywhere meant it would go into oceans rather than landfill, she wanted students to be mindful of their rubbish.

“They will learn to put their rubbish in the bin and learn how much it means to our planet to stop landfill and putting rubbish everywhere,” she said.

Lismore Primary School also picked up rubbish on its grounds, with Lismore Landcare’s Alicia Merriam teaching students the importance of picking up litter.

Ms Merrian said Clean Up Australia Day events help remind everyone that keeping the environment clean is about teamwork.

“It’s actually real fun as well to do it because kids all around the world and in Australia can actually have fun and do it together,” she said.

“When we keep our environment clean, it inspires pride, and we’re more inspired to keep it clean and continue to take care of it.

“All those animals in the sea and around Australia, they really need help and they just want people to help them out.”

Lismore Primary principal Brad Whittaker said the school takes pride in sustainability, and teaches students how to be sustainable.

“Doing this is just one small part of what we can do for that,” he said.

“It gets them to think about the importance of caring for the environment around them.

“I’d like to think doing something like this might mean that, if they spot bits of rubbish as they’re walking around the street, that they might be inclined to pick it up.

“It’s just the little things, if we can do those, they do make a difference.”
