Students lead creative fete

NOORAT Primary School was all fun and games on the last day of term thanks to the creative efforts of students participating in the Hands on Learning program.
The games included a twist on iconic fete-themed games including twister, ring toss, noughts and crosses, kerplunk and a water gun race.
Hands on Learning coordinator Sandy Noonan said each student selected a game and oversaw its initial design, building and running the experience on the day.
“We’ve had a group of games which students selected from, then set about building,”she said.
“All of the games were created using what we already had, or finding bits and pieces.
“Schools don’t seem to have a lot of fete days anymore so it was something we wanted to do.”
The concept was designed to strengthen bonds between peers, give students new responsibilities and allow the students new opportunities to enhance practical learning.
“Each student set about running their own games on the day, taking on a bit of responsibility and showing leadership in explaining the rules and making the kids play sensibly,” Ms Noonan said.
Noorat Primary School principal Ilona Watkins thanked the students for a “fantastic” way to celebrate the final day of term.
“The students have been working on this across the term, so it’s nice for them to share what they have been doing and have a bit of fun,” she said.
“It’s been top secret; nobody else knew what they were creating which I think build excitement for everyone.
“What a way to end term – you could see all the laughing and the smiles, so they’re all enjoying it.”
