Summit success
YOUNG people from across the Corangamite Shire gathered in Camperdown last Thursday for the return of the Corangamite Youth Leadership Summit.
The summit, now in its second year, many young people gather at Camperdown’s Theatre Royal for the Corangamite Shire Council-led event.
Council coordinator community development and engagement Bec Reedman said 108 young people from across the shire gathered to develop their skills and confidence in leadership.
“Participants included Year Seven-12 students from Camperdown College, Mercy Regional College, Terang College, Cobden Technical School, Timboon P-12 and Noorat Scouts,” she said.
“Three facilitators from the Youth Leadership Academy Australia (YLAA) delivered the summit, blending empowering messages with hands-on activities that challenged students to think, collaborate and lead.
“In smaller groups, the participants were led through activities and discussions around youth advocacy, encouraging students to identify key issues and explore how to use their voices for change.
“Another workshop tested their problem-solving and communication skills in a silent maze challenge.
“After the interactive group sessions, students were prompted to reflect on what values were important to them and how these can shape the type of leader they are and their ability to positively influence others.”
After a lunch catered by Mercy Regional College hospitality students, nine young people got up on stage to join a question and answer youth panel.
“Students were asked a series of questions and gave their insight on a range of topics, including the impact of drought, social media and the experiences of youth in rural vs urban areas,” Ms Reedman said.
“The summit gave young people a new sense of confidence and empowerment to lead and make a difference in their communities.”
