Sunnyside House shares celebration with community
SUNNYSIDE House saw a strong crowd last Saturday as the aged care facility celebrated 75 years with an open day for the community.
The celebrations saw visitors tour the facility, explore historical displays from the organisation’s archives, enjoy the gardens and sharing morning tea while reflecting on Sunnyside House’s remarkable contribution to the region over more than seven decades.
Sunnyside House’s journey began in 1945 when the Country Women’s Association Old Folks Home Committee led fundraising efforts to purchase a building to convert into an aged care facility.
Board chair Tony Dupleix said the event celebrated the strong community spirit which established and sustained Sunnyside House across generations.
“Sunnyside was built by the community, for the community, so it was wonderful to celebrate this milestone together,” he said.
A highlight of the celebration was an address from Sunnyside House ambassador Dr John Menzies OAM, who shared his deep personal and professional connection with the organisation spanning almost five decades.
Dr Menzies reflected on his 49 years serving as general practitioner (GP) to Sunnyside residents, as well as his family’s own experience with parents and in-laws living at the home.
He also acknowledged the contribution of his wife Caroline, who served as deputy chair of the board 25 years ago during the major fundraising campaign and construction of the current residence.
Dr Menzies also paid tribute to Caroline’s significant role in establishing and nurturing the gardens which continue to surround and enrich the home today.
“Community support has always been fundamental to Sunnyside,” he said.
“It was established by local people and it has always relied on that same spirit of generosity and involvement.”
Established through the dedication and generosity of local residents, the organisation has continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of aged care while remaining proudly independent.
As part of the anniversary celebration, Mr Dupleix officially launched the Sunnyside House Winter Appeal which aims to raise funds to refurbish and update the residents’ lounge room.
The refurbishment project will include new purpose-designed furniture, improved storage, updated flooring and refreshed interiors to create a safer, more welcoming and functional space for residents and families.
Chief executive officer Jo Forrest said the project is an important investment in residents’ wellbeing and quality of life.
“Sunnyside House has served our residents and families for many years and we are committed to providing a home where residents feel comfortable, respected and connected,” she said.
“As our community grows and our home ages, some of our shared spaces now need updating to ensure they continue to support the wellbeing, dignity and safety of those who live here.
“We have chosen to begin this next chapter with the refurbishment of the lounge room – a space where residents gather to relax, share stories, participate in meaningful activities and spend precious time with family and friends.
“It is where community happens every day.”
The appeal was launched with a $60,000 donation toward the appeal from the Sunnyside Op Shop.
The contribution was formally presented by Op Shop president Dianne Hampson and treasurer Jeanette Duncanson, reflecting the ongoing commitment of volunteers and supporters who continue to play such an important role in the life of Sunnyside House.
The total cost of the refurbishment project is $125,000, with the Sunnyside House Ladies Auxiliary and Sunnyside Op Shop providing significant leadership support toward the campaign.
At time of publication, the fundraiser has reached $61,399.
Dr Menzies said the refurbishment would make a meaningful difference to residents’ daily lives.
“Small changes can make a big difference to residents’ comfort and quality of life,” he said.
Sunnyside House is now calling on the broader community to help raise the remaining funds needed to complete the project and continue the long tradition of community support which has shaped the organisation since its beginnings.
“Together, we can ensure Sunnyside House remains a place of comfort, dignity and belonging for generations to come,” Ms Forrest said.
