Support local business, win big

A LUCKY local has walked away with a $500 travel voucher thanks to a national initiative to support small fruit and vegetable retailers.
Kylie Conheady received the $500 travel voucher last week after shopping at Greavesy’s Fruit & Veg in Terang.
The competition was launched by A Better Choice, a national initiative aiming to support more than 550 small fruit and vegetable businesses.
Ms Conheady said it was “great” to have been named a winner of one of the travel vouchers.
“It was a big surprise,” she said.
“I love coming in to Greavesys, they have such good variety and it’s great to support a local business.”
Five travel vouchers valued at $500 have been given away over the last 10 weeks, with a grand prize of a $2500 travel voucher open to entries for just a few more days.
A Better Choice state program co-ordinator Zac Egan, who visited Terang to present the winning voucher, said the program aimed to educate consumers of the benefits of buying produce from their local fruit and veg shop.
“It’s always great to see the smile on someone’s face when they’ve had a win, but it’s more about highlighting the fruit and veg shop and trying to tell their story,” he said.
“It’s a lot better product, you’re going to get a lot better service and they are produce experts who know where the produce comes from and can recommend things based on what is in season."
“We run two promotions each year designed to get people to their local fruit and veg shop, and each year Greavesy’s does a great job and are one of the stand outs across more than 180 stores in Victoria – always among the top handful getting people engaged and involved in the promotion.”
Greavesy’s Fruit & Veg co-owner Cassie Greaves said she had been involved with the A Better Choice initiative for nearly four years.
She said while she “couldn’t be happier” to see a local customer win one of the prizes, she was also thankful for the willingness of the community to support a small, local business.
“The way people are eating and shopping has changed – a lot of it is about convenience, but at your local fruit and veg shop you’re getting fresher produce,” Mrs Greaves said.
“Produce that is not stored for long periods of time, is bought direct from farmers and growers Australia and, as a small business, we manage our turnover a lot better than major supermarkets would."
“It’s also ours. This isn’t just someone doing their job in a major supermarket. If someone buys a rotten piece of broccoli, it’s embarrassing for us because it is us selling it."
“You’re representing yourself and who you are by what’s on the shelf, not just representing a company.”
There are just days left to get an entry in for a chance to win the $2500 travel voucher major prize, with entries closing on July 17.
