The project came to fruition after careful research and consideration to ensure the cleaning made the biggest difference possible.

“We decided to do this project because we found that 128,000 Australians die and only 14,000 graves are cleaned every year,” they said.

“So we thought we should do something to encourage relatives, friends, and even just people in the community to come together and help rural areas become tidy and feel closer with their town.”

Corangamite Shire councillor and Cobden Cemetery Trust secretary Jo Beard was impressed with the initiative.

“As secretary of the Cobden Cemetery Trust, the girls initiated their project via me, and it’s safe to say I was blown away with their idea and thoughtfulness to want to do such a special gesture,” she said.

“Our Trust members were very impressed and grateful for their assistance and respectful volunteering.

“The girls were amazing and they, along with the school and their families, should be so proud.”

A number of other PEAK Projects have also been completed recently, with the annual PEAK Program offering Year 8 students at Mercy the chance to make a difference doing something they are passionate about.
