Sustainable beauty display
TIMBOON P-12 school students created a stunning hand-crafted dress from discarded materials, highlighting the beauty which is possible through sustainability.

Students Asha Loughnan, Ruby Pender and Willow Roberts hand crafted a couture garment using the by-product of milk labels which was otherwise destined for landfill.
The dress showcased a brilliant example of how recycled material can be transformed into expressive art.
Timboon P-12 school art teacher Gail Higgins said the concept had come about while she was teaching at another school – after the school was given by-product to utilise in the art room.
“We were given rolls of plastic which looks like paper roll, which is left over from when milk labels go on plastic bottles,” she said.
“It was a challenge to figure out what to do.
“This year we had three students, Asha Loughnan, Ruby Pender and Willow Roberts, who loved the idea and jumped at the chance to make a beautiful garment.
“They worked together to think about what they wanted, and they’ve done an outstanding job – they’re so proud, and they really enjoyed themselves.
“The design fits in with our school philosophy of sustainability, being purposeful with our recycling efforts and being conscious of the environment.”
In designing the garment, the students collaboratively planned, designed, and constructed the dress working as a cohesive team.
Careful attention was given to the design elements, including the bust, waist and hemline to ensure these features complimented the overall silhouette and aesthetic vision.
The result is a striking fashion statement, which highlights the Year 9 Art students' creativity and innovative approach to sustainable fashion.
