COBDEN and District Orchid Club members attended the 22nd Annual Victorian Orchid Clubs Challenge weekend earlier in the month.
The Kerang Mid Murray Orchid Club hosted the event.
Cobden and District Orchid Club president Denise Robertson congratulated all prize getters.
“As Cobden is a small club we can be very proud of everyone who bought plants to show,” she said.
“We were delighted to receive 14 awards for our stand.
“Many thanks to 17 members who were able to come away for the weekend and help set up our display.”
Mrs Robertson paid special mention to Cobden member David Staggard who won Champion Zygopetalum and also received the OSCOV medallion at the challenge.
Club winners for the weekend were:
• David Staggard - Champion Zygopetalum and 3rd Intermediate Cym;
• Don and Betty Stevenson - Best Orchid from Cobden other than a champion, 2nd Native Hybrid Sarc, 2nd Australian Native Dendrobium, 3rd Native Hybrid Dendrobium and 3rd Laelinae Alliance Cluster;
• Anita Evans 2nd Phalaenopsis, 3rd Mini Cym and 3rd Cymbidium Specimen;
• Rhonda Alexander - 3rd Zygopetalum Hybrid; and
• John Whitewood 3rd Paphiopedilum Hybrid. Next year’s Country Club Challenge is hosted by Warrnambool Orchid Club.
Mrs Robertson said 22 members from the Cobden club along with some members from the Warrnambool Orchid Club travelled to Port Fairy to Michael and Bernadette Matthews home.
“Members had a wonderful afternoon looking at all the different orchid’s that they grow, and while having a cuppa Michael spoke of how they have to change their growing methods to have success with their orchid’s,” she said.
“He said he is still on his L Plates. Michael and Bernadette shifted to Port Fairy about 15 months ago, where they came from Horsham, so the climate was quite different from where they are today.”
The Cobden Orchid Club’s next meeting is Friday, August 11, at the Heytesbury Room Cobden Civic Hall for the annual meeting followed by our general meeting.
Interested residents are invited to attend.
