Swans back on track
CARAMUT returned to the winners’ list in round 13 of the Mininera and District senior football competition with a 28 point win over Great Western.
The Swans led all day but were challenged by the visitors in the 12.11.83 to 8.7.55 win at the Caramut Recreation Reserve.
“They pushed us for probably a couple of quarters before we got away in the third quarter and played some really nice footy,” Caramut coach Scott Judd said.
“We were probably enough in front with the weather and the ground conditions to get the win; they played some handy footy in patches and matched us in the conditions and how they went about it.”
The third term was decisive in the result, with Caramut extending its half-time lead of 13 points to 32 points at the last change.
“We had a two goal lead going into the third, and then put the foot down a little bit, it was nice to kick a few goals in the wet and get that lead.
“At the end of the day, four points is four points and in the position we’re in, it’s nice to get a win and grind it out when possibly in previous times we might not have been able to get that done.”
Ethan Jenkins was best for the Swans in the win.
“With Dylan Burns out, EJ has stepped up as the sole ruckman and competes really well in that role.
“He also competes very well at ground level and basically gave us another midfielder in the wet; he thrives in those conditions.”
Matthew Rook was second best in the win for Caramut.
“Rooky provides energy and run, carry and spark around the contest that we previously haven’t had and his willingness to make something out of nothing is pretty good, he’s been going really well.”
Ben Makepeace returned to the Swans line-up for the first time in five weeks and led the goal kickers with four.
“Ben was a bit rusty, he actually didn’t kick a goal until after half time, so kicked the four goals in the second half and kicked straight as well.
“It’s nice to have him back after some time out, just good to have him sitting down the forward line doing his thing.”
This week Caramut will face sixth placed Penshurst at the Penshurst Recreation Reserve.
“This game is going to be extremely tough, they’ve got a lot to play for and they recruited quite well before the June 30 cut-off.
“Going forward every game is a final for them if they are to make the top five and with their top end talent it’s going to be a whole different ball game to when we played them earlier in the season.”
Caramut was also too strong in the reserves, winning 8.5.53 to 1.6.12.
Teba Lott, Harley Kelp and Mark Lehmann were best for Caramut, with Lott kicking three goals.
The under 17 game saw Great Western score a 8.10.58 to 4.3.27 win.
Charlie Pearse, Archie Hocking and Drew Hassett were best for the Swans in the loss, with Bodie Jubb kicking two goals.
The under 13 game saw Caramut score a convincing 12.14.86 to 1.0.6 win.
Best for the junior Swans were Rhyda Tucker, William Diprose and Harry Diprose, with Ruby Russell and Arlo McRae kicking three goals each.
The A grade netball saw Great Western score a 49-21 win.
Caramut’s best were Zoe Wagstaff and Kimberley Tebble, with Wagstaff shooting nine goals.
The B grade game saw Great Western record a 32-26 win.
Nada McCarroll and Carmel Moloney were best for Caramut, with Charlotte Delaney shooting 18 goals.
In C grade, Caramut scored a 27-21 win.
Julia Mann and Edie Douglas were the Swans best, with Mann shooting 12 goals and Rachel Hassett 11.
Great Western was too strong in the 17 and under netball, recording a 40-22 win.
Fionnuala Bailey and Pepper Bowes were best for the Swans, with Marli McRae shooting 13 goals.
The 15 and under netball saw Caramut have a 29-17 win.
Pippa Dufty and Isabelle Bricknall were best for the Swans, with Alex Lehmann scoring 23 goals.
In the 13 and under game, Great Western had a 16-13 win.
Payson Walker and Montana Redmond were best for the junior Swans, with Tessa Young shooting seven goals.
