Swans losing streak to Taty ends
A 27 year drought was broken on Saturday, with Caramut defeating Tatyoon for the first time since 1999 with a 30 point win in the round five Mininera and District senior football match.
Caramut outscored Tatyoon in each of the first three quarters with both teams kicking four goals and three behinds in the final term.
The match at the Caramut Recreation Reserve saw the Swans run out winners 13.12.90 to 8.12.60.
“The club and community are very happy with how the team's going” Caramut coach Scott Judd said.
“The win was a long time coming against a renowned team in the comp in terms of finals and also a real contender most years for probably a long time of that period, a lot of hard work has gone into it over the last few years, let alone over the last 20 or so years to have that achievement as well, so it's nice to get a bit of reward.”
Judd was happy with how his team controlled the game.
“We had a three goal lead at quarter time and then we kept a four or five goal lead for the rest of the game.
“Arguably we didn't take all our chances throughout the course of the last three quarters, we didn't put them away, they stayed around but it didn't really change the buffer, we got away with a good win.”
Ruckman Dylan Burns was best for the Swans in the win.
“Dylan has been working over the last few weeks in terms of getting a bit of form, he got in the best last week and he played very well on the weekend.
“He gave us first use and also was good behind the ball and getting set up in our structures, he's a good one to get a bit of confidence into.”
Co-captain Joel Harriss was also in Caramut’s best.
“Joel arguably could have been best on as well, he sets the tone both defensively and offensively.
“I'd love to know how many one percenters or tackles he had for the game, he's pretty amazing on all that.”
Teenagers Spurs Lynch and Samual O’Sullivan drew praise from Judd.
“They have both been playing wing, half-forward flank roles, young kids that are getting a very good opportunity to play senior footy and are getting better each week and they're definitely showing that they can play senior footy.
“Spurs on the weekend didn't lose many 50-50 contests and can use the ball quite well as well, same with Sammy, they're still only young, so it's nice to see that we've got a couple of very good kids.”
Forwards Damien Wynd and Ben Makepeace contributed well for the Swans, kicking five and three goals respectively.
“Damo kicked five on the weekend, he got on the end of it from a bit of hard work, he’s definitely dangerous and can kick a few goals.
“Ben is pretty consistent in terms of bobbing up for a few goals every week and is a hard match up, it's nice to have a few different scoring options, I think we're going all right with that.”
This week Caramut head to Alexandra Oval in Ararat to play 2025 grand finalists the Ararat Eagles.
“It's a massive game in terms of context of the season, they beat Glenthompson/Dunkeld on the weekend and between Glenthompson/Dunkeld, Ararat and us, we'll probably fight for the same idea to get into finals, it's another one to see what we can do.
“They've had our measure for a couple of years, it will be nice to be able to see where we're at and test if we're up to hopefully playing where we want to be.”
Tatyoon got the points in the reserves, scoring a 9.10.64 to 7.5.47 win.
Finn Dennis, Carl Lehmann and Adam Lehmann were best for the Swans reserves, with Joe Douglas kicking four goals and Lachlan Higginson two.
Caramut stalwart and former president Phil Edwards played his 250th game in red and white in the reserves match.
“Phil has been there through the thick of things when times got tough and led by example or been doing something around the club to keep it going” Judd said.
“He’s only 33 so to be able to step up in the hardest times, it's nice for him to get some reward but also get to play in a team that's hopefully a little bit more successful going forward in the twos.”
In the under 17 football, Caramut won 13.8.86 to 6.4.40.
Andrew Gapes, Nathan Mann and Drew Hasset were best for Caramut, with Hassett kicking fours goals and Gapes and Bodie Jubb two goals each.
Tatyoon took out the under 13 football with a 5.4.34 to 1.2.8 win.
William Pearse, Harry Diprose and Arlo McRae were best for the junior Swans, with William Pearse kicking the only goal.
Tatyoon were too strong in the A grade netball, winning 76-19.
Tahlee Dannatt and Jess Crow were Caramut's best in the loss, with Zoe Wagstaff shooting nine goals, Maddi Calvert six and Yolie O’Sullivan four.
The B grade game also went the way of Tatyoon who won 33-16.
Charlotte Delaney scored eight goals for Caramut, with Lily Singleton and Nada McCarroll best.
In C grade, Caramut had a 34-20 win.
Rachel Hassett scored 27 goals and was named best along with Emma McCrae.
Penshurst scored a 45-12 win in the 17 and under game, with Sarah Russell shooting eight goals with Alex Lehmann and Grace O’Sullivan best for Caramut.
In the 15 and under game, Tatyoon had a 34-8 win.
