The round 17 match saw the Magpies score a 12.9.81 to 7.13.55 victory at the Leura Oval.

The Bombers held a slender two point lead at half-time, with the third quarter decisive in the result.

“The first and second quarters were a really good battle; a bit of a scrap,” Cobden coach Brody Mahony said.

“It was just the third quarter where Camperdown played it more on their terms.”

The Bombers had more of the ball in the final term but couldn’t make a real inroad.

“We had a really good last quarter but couldn’t capitalise, we had 18 inside 50s but only kicked three goals six,” Mahoney said.

“It was disappointing we couldn’t put it on the scoreboard.”

Angus Uwland was best for Cobden in the loss.

“Gus was super out on the wing and on the ball, he really broke lines and moved the ball forward for us,” Mahony said.

Ruckman Matt Clarke’s game also impressed his coach.

“Camperdown don’t have a ruckman of Matt’s size so he was hard for them to match up on.

“He got a heap of hitouts and took some good clunks around the ground, his development this year has been really good.”

Captain Paul Pekin also played a strong game for the Bombers.

“Peko was hands on around the contest, he copped a lot from the opposition.

“He’s had a really strong last four or five weeks.”

Forward Matty Drayton kicked two goals in another good performance.

“Matty has nearly been our most consistent player.

“He’s getting more attention now we are playing everyone the second time around and they know him, yet he’s still playing good footy.”

Michael Koroneos was the Bombers other multiple goal kicker with two.

Cobden will finish its season this week against Portland at the Cobden Community Bank Recreation Reserve.

Cobden got the points in the reserves football with a 10 point win, 6.7.43 to 5.3.33.

Angus Molan, Tully Darcy and Noah Sinnott were Cobden’s best, with Sinnott kicking three goals and Darcy two.

The under 18 game saw Cobden have a strong win, 12.14.86 to 1.4.10.

Ryan Mottram kicked three goals and Finn Darcy two, with Eddie Walsh, Ollie Rial and Cooper Beard the Bombers best.

In the Open netball, Cobden scored a 63-50 win.

The match served as a preview of the elimination final in two weeks’ time where the teams will meet again.

“It’s been quite a privilege the last three games to play North Warrnambool, Warrnambool and Camperdown and be tested,” Cobden coach Nadine McNamara said.

“Camperdown has certainly improved a lot since the last time we played them.”

Alicia Blain was best for Cobden in the win.

“Alicia played a fantastic game as both a wing defence as well as centre, she did a great job in creating turnovers.”

Goal defence Jess McGlade was also in the best for the Bombers.

“Instead of the zone we went one on one for the second half where Jess won lots of ball for us.”

McNamara paid tribute to Jaymie Finch who played her 200th game of Hampden league open netball.

“It was great that the milestone came against Camperdown as she’d played there for some time.

“It’s a fantastic achievement and a testament to her at a relatively young age.”

Finch crossed to Cobden in 2018 after 116 open games at Camperdown, while she has also played a season for Colac in the Geelong league.

McNamara expects another tough contest against Portland in the final round.

“Portland got very close against (top of the ladder) South Warrnambool on Saturday, we won’t be complacent against them.”

In the division one netball, Cobden recorded a big 51-18 win.

Grace Taylor, Macey Hicks and Jess Bouchier were Cobden’s best, with Bouchier shooting 22 goals, Nikki Clover 15 and Hannah Anderson 14.

Cobden got the points in division two with a 38-37 win, Hailey Mahony shooting 29 goals.

Cobden had a 36-33 win in the division three game.

Maggie Conheady, Charlotte Meade and Jacque Dickson were best for the Bombers, with Conheady scoring 24 goals.

Camperdown was too strong in the 17 and under netball, scoring a 60-17 win.

Cobden’s best were Shelby Mahony, Marley Howard and Hannah Robertson, with Emily Hickey and Ava Bonner shooting six goals each.

In the 17 and under reserves netball, Camperdown scored a 33-30 win.

Victoria Buckle, Tilly McCrae and Chali Robbins were best for the Bombers, with Layla Blomfield scoring 17 goals.
