A PASSION for home brewing has seen three families who began Middle Island Brewing Co take out a bronze award.

Camperdown local and business director Briony Howells said the business’ mid strength ale ‘The Guardian’ won a bronze medal in the ‘reduced/low alcohol ale’ category in the Royal Melbourne Australian International Brewing Awards (AIBA).

“We are incredibly pleased with the award,”she said.

“AIBA is one of the oldest brewing competitions in Australia with over 2634 beers from 355 breweries from over 20 countries around the world entered this year.

“Many well known breweries like CUB, Stone and Wood and Balter were represented, so for us to receive a medal was amazing.”

Mrs Howells said the brewery was started last year by “three families who all share a passion for craft beer” launching their first beer in November.

“We all met at the Sow and Piglets Brewery in Port Campbell through a local homebrew club,” she said.

“My husband and I have been brewing in Camperdown since we moved here in 2007.

“We’ve had many great times sharing our recipes with family and friends.”

Mrs Howells said the business had just released its fourth beer – an oyster stout called ‘Get Shuck’d’.

“We also have a pale ale and wheat beer available,” she said.

“We would love to open up our taproom inthe future."

“We love the tourism/hospitality scene in the South West. There are so many great new and existing venues that really showcase what we have down here.”

Mrs Howells thanked the local business community for its support.

“You can buy our beers in Camperdown at the Commercial Hotel, Snout in the Trough, Lake Edge Cafe, Wellnest Cafe and Camperdown IGA,” she said.

“We would really like to thank these local businesses for supporting us and hope that many other businesses will support local beers.”
