TDHS to host volunteer morning
TIMBOON and District Health Service staff are inviting the community to a volunteer celebration and recruitment morning on Tuesday, May 19 at 10.30am.
The event, to be held in the community health building, will recognise the important contribution of current volunteers while encouraging new people to get involved.
Volunteers at TDHS support a range of services including Meals on Wheels, community transport, social support group, palliative care and therapy dog, playing a vital role in the local health service.
Volunteer driver Linda Pender said she became involved with TDHS after doing work experience at the hospital through a course.
“I made the decision to stay and keep volunteering because I loved it,” she said.
“It’s nice being around all the clients.
“I do community driving and I go up to Cobden and Timboon and support the clients to have social outings.”
The morning will include light refreshments, an opportunity to meet volunteers and staff, a guest presentation from ICARE Volunteer of the Year Award recipient Des Lourey and TDHS staff will be available to answer questions on the day.
Mr Lourey said it was crucial for volunteers to step up so the system doesn’t fall apart.
“In the country areas, the public transport is virtually non-existent, so it’s us people who drive that support them,” he said.
“So many people have either had their license taken off them or they don’t have a car and it’s the only way they can get to doctor’s appointments.
“It’s crucial that we keep bringing people in to keep that system operating.
“So many people, when they retire, they have all this spare time on their hands and they don’t know what to do.
“They’re taking up bowls or golf and whilst that’s great, it’s exercise, you could also fit in the volunteer driving because it’s so flexible.”
Community members interested in volunteering can learn more about available roles and register their interest on the day.
RSVPs are requested by Tuesday, May 12 for catering purposes.
