Teeing off for cancer research

A TEAM of local golfers will take on a challenging day on the course next Friday to raise money for a good cause.

The Terang Golf Club will play host to an eight-man team who will hit the greens with ambitions of raising thousands of dollars for Cancer Council as part of The Longest Day fundraiser.

The national fundraising event challenges teams on take on either 36, 54 or 72 holes of golf in one day to raise funds for cancer research.

This year’s team is comprised of some of the districts best golfing talents; Stephen Arundell, George Beasley, Phil Beasley, Riley Scanlon, Fred Beasley, Josh Brown, Caleb Kavanagh and Liam Venn.

The members have already collectively raised $3785 for the cause.

Team member Stephen Arundell said the team will be taking on the significant 72-hole challenge, the equivalent of playing four rounds of golf in one day.

“Our team of eight golfers will be teeing off at around 5.45am and we won’t finish until around 5.30-6pm,” he said.

“It’s all walking, too. There’re no golf carts allowed.”

The team has previously undertaken the challenge to throw their support behind Cancer Council, and will return this year among more than 5000 people across Australia who will be taking part in the national event which has already raised $1.6 million.

“It’s a different crew to last time and for a few of us it’s our first time - Phil Beasley has done it three times and for a few of the younger guys it’ll be the first time,” Mr Arundell said.

“We’ll get through it with sore legs

“It’s a challenge, but most of the golfers play pennant together so we’re all excited to have a challenge.

“It’s a good opportunity to get together and raise some money for such a great organisation.”

The team will tee off at the Terang Golf Club on Friday, December 13, and welcome any support with twilight golf also available on the night and a barbecue in the afternoon at around 5pm.

Mr Arundell thanked those who had already donated in support of Cancer Council’s life-saving efforts, with the fundraiser already on the precipice of surpassing the $4000 figure the team had set out to raise.

“We’re hugely appreciative,” he said.

“It’s great to see the support we’re getting at this challenging time of year.”

Anyone wanting to support the team was invited to donate online at https://www.longestday.org.au/fundraisers/TerangGolfClub.
