Terang to host elder abuse awareness event
CORANGAMITE Shire Council’s Positive Ageing, Access and Inclusion Team has invited residents to a free morning tea to support those at risk of elder abuse and help raise awareness in the community.
Council will be hosting an Elder Abuse Awareness Morning Tea next Monday, June 15 from 10.30am at the Terang Civic Centre in the Rose Room.
Those wishing to attend the morning tea are reminded bookings are essential for catering purposes.

Corangamite Shire Council mayor councillor Kate Makin said the day was an important one as Monday, June 15 marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
“Vulnerable older people can be subjected to financial, emotional, psychological, physical, sexual, social or a combination of abuse,” she said.
“The heartbreaking thing is it is often done by family members, relatives or friends.
“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an opportunity to learn how we can recognise the signs and access local services and guidance to help support our older residents.
“Given most elder abuse occurs behind closed doors, it is important for loved ones, friends, neighbours and service providers to watch out for signs, listen and offer help.
“Together we can help build a safer, fairer community for everyone.”

Mpower Inc. coordinator of community development and South West Elder Abuse Prevention Network representative Frazer Ormondroyd will deliver an engaging and interactive presentation.
“Elder abuse prevention is everybody’s business,” he said.
“The aim of the presentation is to create meaningful conversation and understanding through the sharing of essential awareness information, highlighted by the power of lived experience.
“Participants will actively explore practical strategies to recognise, respond to, and prevent elder abuse.
“You’ll build awareness, learn how to access local support, and discover how you can play a role in fostering a fairer, safer and more equitable community for older people.
“Together we can create a community where older people feel safe, valued and heard.”
