TONY’S Terriers defeated Mark’s Battlers to win the 2023 Terang table tennis premiership.

The Terriers were triumphant in most of the close matches and also included one major upset.

Ian Rochfort was competitive against Mark Smith in the first match, but Mark prevailed in straight games two, nine and six.

Tony Young got the Terriers on the board in a tight match against Vesha Chapagai 11-9, 11-8, 9-11 and 11-5.

Tyler Smith’s first game saw him defeated John Rantall in straight games three, seven and four.

The first doubles match was a cracker, which included some long rallies, excellent defending of attacking shots and going for pressure shots being match point down.

The Terriers combination of Tony Young and Tyler Smith were unable to match the Battlers pair of Mark Smith and Vesha Chapagai losing 15-17, 11-5, 13-15, 14-12 and 7-11.

The next rotation of singles saw the upset of the season, with Tyler Smith defeating his father for the first time winning eight, eight and six.

This win put the Terriers ahead and on track to premiership glory.

Ian Rochfort had a good match against Vesha Chapagai, but Vesha’s attacking game proved too strong in the end winning in four games 11-8, 8-11, 11-8 and 11-7.

Tony Young’s game was too strong for John Rantall, winning in straight games that all were won 11-5.

The Battlers needed to win the doubles to stay in the contest, the pairing of Young and Rochfort were too good winning 11-9, 11-13, 11-8 and 11-7.

With the final rotation of singles matches, the Battlers needed to win all three.

Tyler Smith, coming off the high of defeating his father, needed to fight back from two games down to cap off a brilliant night, winning all his matches, against Vesha Chapagai 9-11, 3-11, 11-8, 11-8 and 11-9.

On the other table Ian Rochfort was pushed by John Rantall, but won in four games 7-11, 11-9, 14-12 and 11-4.

The final match between the two number ones wasn’t played as the Terriers had an unbeatable lead of 7-3 and the premiership in their hands.

Terang Tables Tennis will recommence in April 2024 with a couple of practice nights followed by a mini tournament to lead into the season.
