Last Friday marked a special occasion for Mrs Ralph, who notched up 40 years in the role.

Reflecting on the years in the job she said it had been enjoyable.

“The job come up with the then Heytesbury Shire and I applied and was lucky enough to get the job,” Mrs Ralph said.

“I’ve enjoyed it, but it’s challenging – the weather and the cars in particular.

“The weather is the worst - and the speeding cars - but it’s been a pleasure putting all the kids safely across the road.”

She said she was still enjoying the role and had no plans of hanging up the stop sign just yet.

Mrs Ralph said she had seen generations of families attending the Cobden Primary School.

“I’ve put my own children, grandchildren and nephews and nieces across the road,” she said.

“The kids always say “thank you Sue”; they are a joy to put across.

“They are well behaved kids.”

Mrs Ralph said the job hasn’t always been smooth sailing.

“I’ve had a lightning bolt come down beside me before,” she said.

“I’ve had about two weeks off in the 40 years.”

Mrs Ralph said it has been a pleasure taking on the role.

“The school have been supportive,” she said.

“Thank you to the school, the police and the shire for their support.”

Cobden Primary School held a special presentation for Mrs Ralph at the school assembly last Friday.

Acting principal Ilona Watkins said Mrs Ralph was a “valuable part of our Cobden Primary School family”.

“As a school community we appreciate the incredible efforts and dedication Sue has shown to ensure our students and families arrive and leave school safely every day,” she said.

“Working in this role and with the school for such an incredible length of time is such an achievement that deserves to be celebrated and recognised.”
