The Times welcomes a new reporter

THIS is just as much a shock to me as it is to you.

New in town: A fresh new face at Western District Newspapers is learning the ropes.

My name is Lizzie Sotak and last week I joined Western District Newspapers as a cadet journalist.

I’ve been wondering what to do with myself for a while.

I’m from Melbourne, mostly. Originally, I’m from California, but I moved to Australia when I was still quite young.

I recently finished an arts degree majoring in literary studies at Monash University, but I didn’t know where to go beyond that.

All I knew was that I liked to write, read and edit the works people put together.

Whether it was emails, essays, letters or stories, I would grip them in my greedy hands to proofread and grammar check.

I enjoy my own creative writing as well and I like to experiment with a variety of different styles inspired by a range of literary theories.

Despite being from Melbourne, I am quite familiar with the region.

As a kid, I spent almost every summer in Port Campbell at my family’s holiday house.

When a family member reached out to me about the opening at Western District Newspapers, I figured I would give it a go as this opportunity presented itself to me at a unique time in my life.

I’m still figuring out life here, as I’m used to the bustle of the city.

It’s exciting, though, to do something I enjoy, I’m learning again and there are great people here.

If we haven’t met yet, I’m sure we will, and I look forward to getting to know the community.
