Thrilling win for Demons
A THRILLING finish saw Timboon score a three point win in the round 12 Warrnambool and District senior football match against Old Collegians on Saturday.
A late goal to teenager Oscar Norman put the Demons up, with an Old Collegians after the siren shot resulting in a behind to give the Demons a 9.8.62 to 8.11.59 win at Davidson Oval.
“Oscar just keeps putting himself in those positions, as a young fella, it’s not the first time he’s kicked two in the last quarter and won us games,” Timboon coach Andrew Hargreaves said.
“With his two in the last quarter, he kicked a nice set shot from the boundary, and then got a crumb and goal from the inside 50 to put us back in front.”
Despite the closeness, Hargreaves said the quality of the game left a lot to be desired.
“It was not a pretty game to watch.
“We just couldn’t get anything going really, missing kicks, dropping marks, it was just one of those games and they were sort of the same.”
Defender Jack McGlade was Timboon’s best in the win.
“Jack was really good across halfback, even his defensive stuff, I reckon he would’ve had five smothers and they were really critical smothers that they would have scored from if he didn’t get to it.
“So it was good defensive game from him, but he also provides a lot of offence for us across halfback; he’s putting together a really strong season for us.”
Ben Saunders and Sam Newey were also in the best for the Demons.
“Ben was probably our cleanest player of the day, our skill level sort of wasn’t up there to a level, but his was, every time he got the footy something happened with it, and he just had that pace and agility to get out of traffic.
“Sam Newey had a big job on (Old Collegians coach) Joey McKinnon who’s a big unit; Sam kept him to no shots in the first half and then that forced him to go into the ruck, which was good for us a little bit, getting him out of the forward line, so credit to Sam for that.”
After a disappointing third term, Hargreaves felt the Demons played their best in the final quarter despite being a man down for much of it.
“They were all over us in the third quarter, and then we ended up getting a player sent off, so we started the last quarter a man down.
“They were going with the breeze, and we ended up kicking four in that time we were a man down; it made us work a little bit harder both ways and link up more as a team, and to kick four in that time shows good maturity for our side to be able to do that.”
The Demons unveiled mid-season recruit Jake Alderding in the game.
Alderding had been playing at Tyrendarra in 2026, previously having played for Thomson, Portarlington and in the main for Drysdale.
“Jake was really good with his tap work, he gives us a backup ruck, which we’ve been searching for all year.
“Jack Matthews has done a brilliant job, but he’s been playing 120 minutes pretty much rucking by himself, and that’s not sustainable for any player, let alone a 21 year-old.
“So to get Jake across, he gave us great coverage as backup ruck and his tap work’s really good, he’s a bit of an undersized ruckman but has got a good vertical leap on him, he set up one of the goals in the last quarter, just a brilliant tap behind and we got a snap crumb off it; he’ll be very handy for us going forward.”
With this weekend’s mid-season break, the next game for the Timboon Demons will be on July 11 against Allansford at the Timboon Recreation Reserve.
The reserves match saw Timboon score a 9.7.61 to 7.3.45 win.
Nathan Ellemor, Robert Matthews, Daniel Shanahan, Tarkyn Love, Jake Robbins and Leroy Steere were best for the Demons, with Love bagging five goals.
Timboon’s under 18.5 team had a 44 point win, 7.16.58 to 2.2.14.
Logan Lyne, Rory Roberts and Rileigh Williams were best for the Demons, with Harvey Redshaw kicking two goals.
The under 16 game saw Timboon record a 7.8.50 to 4.2.26 win.
Dane Nicholls, Ace Roberts, Byron Woods, Jed Watson and William Spokes were the Demons best, with the team having seven individual goal kickers.
In the under 13.5 game, Old Collegians had a 9.8.62 to 1.0.6 win.
Leo Makin, Rory Hollick and Jake McNeill were best for the junior Demons, with Fletcher Hickey kicking the goal.
Old Collegians took out the A grade netball with a 69-42 win.
Kelly Thompson, Giaan Gration and Aysha Hollick were best for the Demons in the loss, with Laura Rosolin shooting 23 goals and Hollick 19.
The A reserve game saw Timboon score a strong 57-22 win.
Lexci Nicholas, Dana Russell and Isabelle Moorhead were the Demons best, with Macy Gale shooting 28 goals and Hannah Maxwell 21.
Timboon scored a 36-28 win in the B grade netball.
Sarah Brown, Rachel Newey and Taya Hanegraaf were best for Timboon, with Brown shooting 19 goals.
The 17 and under netball saw Old Collegians get the points with a 27-12 win.
Best for Timboon were Asha Loughnan, Olivia Benson and Ruby Jones, with Ella Drayton, Jasmine Plozza and Stella Smith scoring four goals each.
Timboon had a 33-3 win in the 15 and under game.
Elise Quarrell, Lahni Hanegraaf and Indii McKenzie were the Demons best, with Aysha Hollick scoring 15 goals and McKenzie eight.
The 13 and under game saw Timboon have a 23-8 win.
Best for the Demons were Brenna Redshaw, Edie Alexander and Grace Askew, with Grace Richardson shooting 11 goals and Alexander seven.
Timboon had a 26-4 win in the 11 and under game.
Kyah Collins, Isla Lenehan and Olivia Newton were best for the junior Demons, with Gretel Hollick shooting 15 goals and Eva Watson 11.
