St Patrick’s Primary School students rolled up their sleeves and picked up rubbish around their school before hitting the town last Friday.

Librarian and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) teacher Paula Atkins said the school had been a part of Clean Up Australia Day since its inception in the 1990s.

“An awareness of how our environment looks and functions best now forms part of our STEM curriculum, with all students investigating how we can reduce, reuse, recycle or repair our consumption and waste,” she said.

“Our students cleaned our school and church grounds, taking note of the type and quantity of litter.

“A group of students spent time cleaning up our beautiful Elm avenue and main street, noting that broken glass, straws and plastic lids were the main items found.”

Students at Camperdown College’s junior campus were also a part of the initiative, cleaning up their school grounds.

Environmental and maintenance leaders Rocco Brooks, Archie Rantall and Izaak Wilson said the day proved successful for everyone at the junior campus.

“We all had fun and managed to almost fill both wheely bins with rubbish from the yard,” the students said.

“We would like to thank Mrs (Jacinta) Tolland and Ms (Vicki) Angus for sorting and organising that special day.

“We would also like to thank everyone for helping to clean the yard.”

The Camperdown Girl Guides were also part of Clean Up Australia Day, with the guides walking to Apex Park and picking up rubbish on Monday.

“We picked up eight bags of rubbish – not small bags, but medium-sized bags – around Apex Park,” guide leader Glenda McIlveen said.

“I was surprised that, at a park like that with lots of bins, there was so much rubbish.

“We walked down the path from the guide hall to Apex Park, collected rubbish around the park and then the children had a play.

“Clean Up Australia Day is for everybody is the main message.”
