Tigers battle despite player shortage
DESPITE an 87-run loss in their round three match in the Colac-South West premier cricket competition, there were plenty of positives for Woorndoo.
Stoneyford won the toss and elected to bat at the Pirron Yallock Recreation Reserve, making 9/268 from their 50 overs.
“I’m pretty happy considering we went down there with only 10 players,” Woorndoo captain Tyler Mungean said.
“We always felt we were in the game at all stages despite the scores.”
Stoneyford’s top three scored the bulk of their runs, all making half centuries.
“We dropped a couple of chances early, including Gayan Yakupiti (who made 69 from 71 balls) under 10 which would have made a big difference.
“It was always hard filling the gaps in the field being one short.”
Woorndoo’s bowlers were able to stem the flow of runs later in the innings, as well as taking regular wickets.
“It was a credit to the boys how we kept going and took it up to them.”
Damien Clifford took 3/14 from four overs, with Euan Irving and Thomas Gray taking two wickets each.
Woorndoo’s openers started the run chase well, putting on 52 before Tyler Schafer was dismissed for 32 from 35 balls.
Mungean scored 39 from 34 balls, Jarryd Walsh made 17 from 23, with Damien Clifford making 21 from 35 balls.
“We got off to a flyer, most of us got starts.
“Disappointing none of us really kicked on but it shows we can get it done.”
The Tigers were dismissed for 171 in the 36th over.
“We’re growing, developing and heading in the right direction.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if we knock off one of the top teams in the coming weeks.”
This week Woorndoo face Pomborneit at Woorndoo.
“We put in a credible performance late last season against them, we’re going to have to bat and bowl well against them, they’re a quality outfit but I think we can take it up to them.”
In division three, Woorndoo had a 45 run loss to Ecklin at Woorndoo.
The visitors batted first and made 3/213 from their 40 overs.
Ben McLeod and Greg Parry both took a wicket each for Woorndoo.
Opening the batting, Brendan Mahncke made 78 from 117 balls but lacked support in the Tigers total of 9/168 from 40 overs.
This week the division three Tigers play Cobden at the Camperdown number two oval.
