Tigers cause an upset
WOORNDOO scored its second win of the season with an upset six wicket win over City United in round 11 of the Colac-South West premier cricket competition.
United, finalists in the recent Sungold Twenty20 tournament in Warrnambool, won the toss and elected to bat first at the Woorndoo Recreation Reserve.
The visitors were going along at a good rate at 1/55 in the 11th over before Euan Irving broke through to remove Xavier Davis.
The left arm orthodox bowler bowled his 10 overs straight, finishing with 3/48 from 10 overs.
“Euan did a great job, he pegged them back when they were scoring well and picked up crucial wickets,” Woorndoo captain Tyler Mungean said.
“Tyler Schafer also bowled very well, he didn’t get the rewards but was just as important.”
Schafer finished with 1/41 from 10 overs, with Mungean taking three wickets and Jarryd Walsh two as City United was dismissed in the 45th over for 172.
“We were aiming to keep them below 200 so we were very happy with that total.
“The pressure our bowlers put on was fantastic in bringing them back from their good start.”
In the run chase, openers Thomas and Jacob Gray put on 23 for the first wicket before Thomas was run out in the 12th over.
“The Gray boys did everything I asked, we wanted them to see off the new ball which they did,” Mungean said.
“It allowed the rest of us to come in and score freely.”
Jacob Gray went on to make 37 from 82 balls but it was the captain who really stood up.
Mungean finished unbeaten on 72 from 95 balls, hitting three sixes and three fours.
Teenager Sam Mahncke joined Mungean towards the end, making 18 not out from 12 balls as Woorndoo passed the score in the 43rd over for the loss of four wickets.
The win meant a lot to the Woorndoo community.
“We had a few beers and a good night; I got plenty of texts from happy Woorndoo supporters which was great.”
This week Woorndoo host Cobden in another big test for the Tigers.
“Our numbers are better, this will be the first week since I’ve been at the club that selection decisions are going to be tough.
“Cobden bowls well and bats deep so it will be a good challenge, if we do what we did on Saturday we will be every chance of taking it right up to them.”
Woorndoo’s division three team rounded out a fantastic day for the club with a two run win over Boorcan at Boorcan.
Batting first, Woorndoo made 7/178 from its 40 overs.
Openers Brendan and Josh Mahncke put on 66 for the first wicket before Brendan was dismissed for 28.
Josh Mahncke top scored with 63 from 54 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes, while William Brain made 48 retired from 71 balls.
In reply, the home team took it right up to Woorndoo.
Needing 12 to win off the last over, Boorcan scored nine to fall two runs short on 4/176 to give the division three Tigers their second win of the season.
This week’s division three game sees Woorndoo play Ecklin at the Terang number two oval.
