Tigers gain insight
SIMPSON’S netballers gained a valuable insight into their ability despite a difficult loss to South Colac over the weekend.
The A grade side went down to South Colac 40-46 in a close fought game, but coach Emily Duynhoven said her side enjoyed stretches of winning netball where the pieces seemed to be falling in to place.
“Considering they’re a top side I think we played a great game,” she said.
“We didn’t get the win like we had hoped but the girls stuck it to them and played a hard game, all game.
“We were with them for most of the game and to fall by six to a final contender gave us a better idea of where we’re at and what we need to work on to get over the line in those games.”
The Tigers found their rhythm throughout the match as they jostled back-and-forth for the lead, which Duynhoven said showed the ability the girls possess.
“The girls had moments where we would go on a nice run and you could tell everyone on the court was doing what they needed to do to get a win,” she said.
“The defenders played a great game, the pressure across the court, where it was just us getting the ball and playing our game, particularly capitalising off turnovers.
“There were parts of the game where we were up and it was good – the girls saw that we can do this.”
Best players were Paige Salmon, Chloe Woods and Sophie Cronin.
“All of our defenders stood out,” Duynhoven said.
“They played a great game and made it hard for the attackers, they didn’t let the ball go in easily and gave pressure all day.
“In attack Soph Cronin played a great game, she had a hard opponent but she drives all game and her feeding to the rim was great.”
The Tigers take on Apollo Bay this weekend, in what Duynhoven forecasts as another tough game.
“Every game is a tough game but we hope to get up,” she said.
“Looking at some of the things we’ve been doing in training, the goal is to implement some new things in to our game.
“But above all, we just want to play a good, hard four quarters of netball and get the girls to a point we can work that out what works best for the whole side.
“It’s always going to be tough, however; I was speaking to the South coach and she said every game is tough with no standout side so ultimately you have to play a full four quarters of netball.”
