Tigers hold fourth
A 43-point win over Moyston Willaura last weekend has enabled Woorndoo Mortlake to remain in the top five.
With just seven home and away rounds left to play, the Mininera League ladder remains tight, with every win a crucial one.
The fourth-placed Tigers sit equal on points with Hawkesdale Macarthur (third) and Ararat (fifth), while reigning premiers Tatyoon are just half a game outside the five.
In front of a home crowd last Saturday, the Tigers were taken by surprise in the opening quarter.
The to-date winless Pumas contained the home side to 2.7 for the term, while adding 2.1 to the scoreboard.
The Tigers bounced back in the second quarter, making better use of opportunities in their forward line to go into the main break with a handy 37-point lead.
To their credit the Pumas regained some momentum in the third and outplayed the Tigers on the scoreboard, adding 3.3 while containing the Tigers to 2.3.
In a low scoring final term, the Tigers took the win, 12.16.88 to 7.11.53.
Tom Gough, Mathew Pemberton, Brent Fedley, Hans Petersson-Dunn, Edward Gubbins and Tim McIntyre were named among the best.
Damien Pemberton led the way on the scoreboard, kicking four for the day, while Jordan Buckley and Matthew Pemberton kicked two each.
Other goal contributors were Jacob Fowler and McIntyre.
The Tigers’ reserves notched up win number four for the season, 12.12.84 to 10.8.68.
Best for the side were Tipa Brown, Tyler Schafer, Andrew Hearne, Rhys Casson and Darren Fox.
Schafer kicked seven majors for the day while Fox and Charles Kenny each contributed two.
