DESPITE a 49-point loss to Irrewaara-Beeac on the weekend, the Simpson Tigers have managed to hold on to fifth spot.
Tigers senior coach Daniel Beard praised the efforts of his side, saying he was “super proud and very excited” to be sitting where they are on the ladder, with every opportunity to play finals.
“This is certainly an exciting time for our club and I couldn’t be prouder of the boys,” Beard said.
“Back in October last year, when we first met, we set ourselves a goal to be in the five and we have done that so far and hopefully if things fall our way this Saturday we will be playing the following weekend.”
The Tigers will take on the sixth placed Lorne at home this weekend, with the winner to secure fifth and a finals berth.
“It’s a definite must-win for us if we are to hold in there (fifth) but I have every belief in the guys that we can do exactly that,” Beard said.
“We can take a lot of positives out of last weekend’s game. Irrewaaara-Beeac are second on the ladder and they’re a quality, well-drilled side.”
Beard made particular mention of the efforts of Brayden Hawkes on the weekend and Jack Hookway at centre half-forward, who both worked hard under “immense pressure with the ball coming in fast and at so many different angles”.
Final scores were Simpson 5.8.38 to Irrewaara-Beeac 12.15.87.
Among the best for the Tigers last Saturday were Brock Neale, Jack Hookway, Brayden Hawkes, Lachlan Gass, Jono Jennings and Braden Poole.
Goals went to Noah Ackerley, Nick Duynhoven, Jono Jennings, Brodie Neale and Rhys Ziegelaar.
The Tigers were also defeated in the reserves game, going down 2.6.18 to 14.6.90.
Best players were Rohan Johns, Daniel Wright, David Weel, Reagan Jones, Peter Bell and Harry Fleming.
Peter Bell and Jack Hawkes were the side’s two goal scorers.
The reserves currently sit fifth on the ladder, one game clear of Irrewaara-Beeac.
They will face second-placed Lorne this Saturday, while Irrewaara-Beeac will take on ninth placed Otway District.
