DESPITE a 49-point loss to South Colac on the weekend, Simpson’s senior footballers remain in fourth on the Colac District ladder.

The Tigers fought hard against the second-placed South on Saturday, earning praise from coach Daniel Beard.

“While we weren’t able to bring home the four points, there was lots of positives to take from the game compared to when we last met in round four,” Beard said.

“It has given them some real self-belief in that we can match it with the top teams."

“Late in the third quarter we got back to within about three goals but we had a lot of players who were spent in the last."

“We had a couple of injures and were down on midfield rotations and they got away from us in the last quarter. But the signs are very encouraging.”

Beard said that with only five rounds remaining, he was looking forward to the finals series.

“It really would be super for us to play finals – it would be a great reward for the boys who have all worked hard going back as far as last November,” he said.

Beard said the vibe around the club at the moment was a positive one and if the side could “snatch a few more wins” in the last remaining rounds it would hold them in good stead.

“It (the club) is just a great place to be around at the moment. Really, from three to seven on the ladder it’s anyone’s game; whoever brings it on the day,” Beard said.

Final scores on Saturday were Simpson 7.2.44 to South Colac 14.9.93.

Best for the Tigers were Jack Hookway, Brad Salmon, Rhys Jasen Van Beek, Brenton De Jong, Brock Neal and Jack Finn.

Goals went to Nicholas Harding (2), Brenton De Jong, Brad Salmon, Jono Jennings, Rhys Jansen van Beck and Tomas Lindquist.

The reserves also suffered a defeat, going down 2.2.14 to 18.9.117.

Best for the Tigers were Reagan Jones, Kristofer Gristede, David Weel, Brodie Neale, Shaun Guy and Grant Watson.

Louis Duynhoven was the only goal kicker for the Tigers with two.

This Saturday the Tigers will face fifth placed Colac Imperials.

With only percentage separating the two sides, the game will no doubt be a close one.
