Tigers roar at Great Western
WOORNDOO/Mortlake scored its biggest senior football win of the Mininera and District season, with a 171-point thumping of Great Western on Saturday.
The Tigers dominated play all day to run out 31.17.203 to 5.2.32 winners at the Great Western Recreation Reserve.
“You don’t necessarily like seeing your opponent struggle like that,” Woorndoo/Mortlake coach Tom Ludeman said.
“We’ve put the hard yards in already, now with two sort of bottom teams in a row then the mid-season bye, we’re a chance to catch up on percentage.”
Zack Lubeek kicked a bag of nine goals and was best for the Tigers.
“He’s getting better and better after round two when he did his hamstring, he’s had five weeks off, it was a good game for him to be easing back into it, he looked dangerous and had sticky hands, which was good.
“He had every opportunity to get his 10, so we sort of went a bit Zach hungry in the last five minutes, he had his opportunities there a few times but couldn’t quite nail that tenth.”
Ed Gubbins and Jordan Buckley also kicked four goals each for Woorndoo/Mortlake.
“Buckley is very opportunistic around goals when the footy is in his hands.
“Gubbins played probably two and a half quarters at full-back like he always does, I just thought why not give him an opportunity, I sent the runner out there, sent Gub to full forward and within 12 seconds he had one on the board,” Ludeman laughed.
Keilan Webster-Bamford, Lochie Gunning and Wil Fleming were others named in the Tigers best, with James Coghlan West with three and Gunning with two the other multiple goal kickers.
This week Woorndoo/Mortlake head to the Moyston Recreation Reserve to play bottom of the ladder Moyston/Willaura.
The reserves match saw Woorndoo/Mortlake score a 10.6.66 to 8.3.51 win.
Harry Lienert, Sebastian Lillie and Chris Crawley were the Tigers best, with Fraser Esposito and Zac Leehane kicking two goals each.
The under 17 game saw Great Western record a strong 13.11.89 to 1.2.8 win.
Best for the under 17 Tigers were Joshua Bunting, Emmet Sheaves, Kai Crawley, Bailey Fox, Johno Carmody and Tommy Fox, with Sam Mahncke kicking the only goal.
The under 13 football saw Woorndoo/Mortlake score a big 16.17.113 to 0.0.0 win.
Best for the junior Tigers were Billy Crawley, Tommy Fox, Sam McCorkell, Mason Crawley, Charlotte Allen and Jack Allen.
Billy Crawley kicked four goals, with McCorkell and Mason Crawley kicking two each.
The A grade netball saw Woorndoo/Mortlake win 48-47.
Best for the Tigers were Ash Spokes and Sarah Cameron, with Cameron shooting 32 goals and Spokes 16.
In B grade, Great Western scored a 40-32 win.
Kristy Crawley and Amy Moore were the Tigers best, with Crawley shooting 19 goals and Chloe Goldsworthy 13.
The C grade game saw Great Western register a strong 39-14 win.
Angela Clifford and Annalise Abbott were best for Woorndoo/Mortlake, with Olivia Schuuring shooting seven goals and Abbott six.
Great Western won the 17 and under netball 31-27.
Indi Wardlaw and Ivy Wardlaw were the Tigers best, with Indi Wardlaw shooting 19 goals.
Woorndoo/Mortlake scored a 30-22 win in the 15 and under netball.
Lexi Harris and Lacey Killen were best, with Natalie Krepp shooting 20 goals and Ivy Wardlaw 10.
The 13 and under game ended in a 21-21 draw.
Paige Maddock and Willow Richardson were best for the junior Tigers, with Maddock shooting 15 goals.
