Timboon Probus Club Notes
PRESIDENT Charles welcomed members, guest speaker Rob Thorpe, his wife and son and guest Marlene Van Niewkerk to our meeting and another cold morning but the heaters and our beanies gave us the warmth we needed.
Probus Song warmed us all up too and our guest speaker was introduced.
Rob Thorpe, who grew up in our district, began studying mechanical engineering at Monash University.
The family spent seven years in the USA where Rob worked with General Motors – Advanced Design, California.
After returning to Melbourne, Rob, as a professional engineer is director of a new company formed in 2020.
At GoMotiv, he works with 20 staff all specialising in particular areas of car design.
Recently, their independent design studio worked on a recreation vehicle, the VinFast compact electric SUV, which was first revealed in Los Angles.
Continuing on, he told us how they developed a unique design for Vietnam, which was very interesting to see.
GoMotiv is looking to complete globally, especially with the Asia-Pacific region, and be an alternative to the Italian studios.
Owning a car is possibly something many of us take for granted, so it was extremely interesting to gain knowledge of how distinctive designs are created. Thank you Rob for a very interesting look into the creation of a new car design.
A light lunch was enjoyed by the Dining Out Group at Little Acorn in Terang and the Caravan Club members entertained us with slides and relevant descriptions of their recent activities and entertainment with the Mountain Men and their horses.
Elizabeth Roberts has offered to take groceries and donations to Food Share in Warrnambool whilst Jean and Barrie are away. Thank you for that, as the Food Share have expressed their appreciation of our donations each month, a worthy cause.
A very successful combined meeting with Cobden, Terang, Timboon and Camperdown Club representatives was held.
Discussions and suggestions were made to share newsletters, which will keep us updated on what the other clubs are doing, including guest speakers, and extended proposed trips that could be made available between the clubs.
General business included a Coastal Walk in Peterborough in July, followed by coffee/lunch, ‘Xmas in July’, reminder of the lunch at Camp Cooriemungle in July and Scrabble at Hazel’s home on Wednesday at 1.30pm.
The Walking Group is still walking on Tuesday morning and another Dining Out group activity in the works.
