Members who came in their Melbourne Cup race day headgear also added to the special day atmosphere.

Our speaker for the day was member Hans Kruse who have a very informative and interesting story of the events leading up to his family’s decision to migrate to Australia in the sixties, and then the journey itself.

He was seven years-old when they left in 1953, the trip took four weeks and they went from freezing in Germany to 40 degrees in Seymour, Australia.

The family were at Bonegilla Migrant Camp for two to three weeks then the family moved from farm-to-farm until they were granted a Heytesbury settlement farm after just nine years.

Learning their English from the ‘John and Betty’ book, they at one stage, walked two miles to school each day.

Hans eventually became a bricklayer’s apprentice and plasterer and was able to build many houses and dairies in the coming years as the Heytesbury area developed.

A lovely cuppa with scones, jam and cream followed and then our meeting opened with the probus song, with Graeme leading us very strongly as usual.

Reports included one from Sue McInnes on the caravan clubs recent trip to Corowa. Activities included a trip around Lake Mulwala cactus country at Strathmerton, Byramine Homestead and Corowa Whiskey and Chocolate.

A very informative guided tour of Bonegilla Migrant Camp stirred up lots of memories for three of our members. All in all, a lovely time was had by members and six guests.

A trip to King Island by another 13 of our members was also reported by Alison. Flying by Rex Airlines to the island, we were met and then transported around the island, and for the next three day, by an off-road 4x4 vehicle.

Some hair raising trips around the hills and onto the coast, showed jut why it is called ‘The Shipwreck Coast’ and then the incredible golf courses – with holes from one side of the bay to the other, light houses, kelp industry and of course their lovely cheese.

The Christmas Dinner will be at the Timboon Golf Club on Monday, December 2.

Horses for our Melbourne Cup Sweep were then drawn out and the meeting closed with god luck wishes all round.
