Timboon suffers first defeat
TIMBOON Gold is taking confidence from its ability to be competitive despite suffering its first Western District Bowls Division loss on Saturday.

TIMBOON Gold is taking confidence from its ability to be competitive despite suffering its first Western District Bowls Division loss on Saturday.
The side narrowly went down 57-52 to Koroit Blue at Koroit but team member Peter Baker was optimistic about the result following the contest.
He said a number of his team-mates had not played much at Koroit previously, but the unfamiliarity did not deter them as they put together a strong performance.
“I think if we had have won the day you could say it was a big game to win,” Baker said.
“It’s one if I’m being truthful that we normally have our backs against the wall in but this time we didn’t.
“We’re in the situation this year where we have the ability to win any game and there’s no reason why we can’t win them all.
“As far as the three games we’ve played so far, we’ve been very competitive. All we have to do for the rest of the season is keep being competitive and that will probably bring results for us.”
The match was a tight encounter after Timboon made a fast start, with the scoreboard see-sawing for the majority of the contest.
Shayne Pudney defeated Brian Lenehan 17-16 and Arthur Finch accounted for Les Johnson 20-18, while Mick Gaut’s rink was left to determine the side’s fate.
His side clawed its way back from a double digit deficit against Damien Clifford, but could not reduce the overall margin as it suffered a 23-15 defeat.
“Shayne’s rink had his nose in front all day – I think his biggest lead was three or four shots while Arthur might have been one down or level going into the last end,” Baker said.
“He picked up a two on that end to win his match and at that point our rink still had two ends to play and we were two shots down overall.
“On the second last end I reckon we dropped a two and we lost another on the last end to lose our rink by eight and lose by five overall.”
Timboon will now take on Warrnambool Blue at Timboon in a match Baker said would be challenging.
“It might be Warrnambool’s second side but whether it’s the first or second side I don’t think it makes any difference and we don’t treat it any differently to any other games,” he said.
“We certainly should have the ability to win, we just have to make sure we’re competitive in the game.
“I think they might have only won the one game but you wouldn’t say you go in there confident you’re going to win it easily.
“It will be a challenging game.”
