Timboon topples City Red
TIMBOON Bowling Club president Peter Baker could not hide his delight after Timboon Gold defeated powerhouse City Red on Saturday.

TIMBOON Bowling Club president Peter Baker could not hide his delight after Timboon Gold defeated powerhouse City Red on Saturday.
Last year’s grand finalist once again upstaged its strongly-fancied opponent, this time 62-54 at Timboon.
It was the club’s second successive victory, with Timboon Gold opening the season with an 18 shot win over Dennington Jets.
Baker, who played as a second in Mick Gaut’s rink, was pleased with the result.
“It’s always a very good win when you knock off one of the big clubs,” he said.
“City Red are a very good side but if you can perform well and stay with them then you’re always a chance.
“We gave ourselves a good chance early in the game and managed to win at the end.”
For the second consecutive week, it was the rink of Fiona Newey, Matt Haugh, Gil Vorwerk and skipper Shayne Pudney which set-up Timboon’s victory.
They recorded a comfortable 27-12 win over Gary Body, which eliminated Gaut’s 22-15 loss to Bryan Sheehan.
Arthur Finch’s rink ensured the result did not go beyond Timboon, drawing its contest with David Wells 20 shots apiece.
“The three rinks got off to a good start right from the word go whereas I didn’t think they bowled as well as they normally do,” Baker said.
“A bit over halfway through we had a reasonable lead but unfortunately our rink over the last seven or eight ends went for a bit of a holiday which reduced the margin a bit.
“Arthur’s rink was second to finish, he had good game with David Wells and came from behind to have a draw on the last end.
“Shayne’s rink had a good game all day – most of the day there wasn’t much in it but I think he was ahead and as the day went on he increased his lead. It was his rink that got us over the line.”
Timboon will now face another perennial finalist in Koroit Blue, with Baker hoping his side can make it “three in a row”.
He knows Koroit will be a tough test, but sees no reason why Timboon was not capable of defeating another one of the division’s stronger clubs.
“Koroit Blue is another powerhouse but there’s no reason why we shouldn’t think we’re not capable of matching them and beating them,” Baker said.
