Top award for Hassett
RISING Camperdown junior footballer Paddy Hassett capped off a memorable season by winning the Hampden League under 16 best and fairest award on Monday night.

Hassett led the vote getters with 23, ahead of Terang Mortlake’s Jesse Fowler on 22 and South Warrnambool’s Patrick Ragg on 19.
“It was a bit of a surprise, I thought us not winning enough games would make it hard to get votes,”Hassett said.
The under 16 Magpies finished seventh on the ladder with four wins and 11 losses.
“It was a bit of a tough year but we did improve with everything, 'Wad' (under 16 coach Adam Roberts) made it a very enjoyable season for us.”
In addition to the league award, Hassett was also recently crowned with the Magpies club under 16 best and fairest award.
Hassett made his under 18 debut in 2025, playing 10 games, as well as his reserves debut, where he appeared four times.
“Playing against bigger bodies in the under 18s and reserves was a great experience, I really learnt a lot.”
In two of those reserves games, Hassett played alongside his father Mick.
“I don’t think playing together was something we thought we’d ever do, it was great it did happen.”
Hassett rated a strong pre-season and extra in-season training as factors behind his strong year.
“I did the pre-season with the seniors as well as with the (Greater Western Victoria) Rebels, then trained all year with the seniors.
“Clinton (senior coach Clinton Thomas) and the senior boys have been really encouraging and happy to give tips.”
Now finished at under 16 level, Hassett is already looking towards preparation for next season.
“I’ll keep doing bits to keep my fitness and am hopeful for another Rebels pre-season as well as putting in another pre-season with Camperdown.”
